The street will not extend any courtesy! The unpredictable environment of the streets is a major catalyst to the way one thinks. One is expected to act in the relatively safe environment of the traditional martial arts training hall. The training hall embodies mutual respect and compliance. There is no training partner on the street, they intend to harm you. The attacks are close in: in your face screaming, shouting, pushing and pulling, aiming to break your physical and mental equilibrium. This unfamiliar setting will automatically test you when you are at less than total capacity. Two things you will never have on the street are space and time! This is survival, not sport!
I have never heard anyone say today is a good day to get mugged, raped, or slapped around. Observe your surroundings and always look out for any slight. Constantly assess your surroundings, considering anything you can use to your advantage and use it! Pick up anything available, hit, and run!
