Über diesen Titel
Devastated by war, Japan in 1945 faced ruin as a major power. Yet within a quarter century it bounced back to become the second largest economy in the world after the United States. How? And why did the country’s economy then crash catastrophically in the 1990s, indefinitely stalling its seemingly unstoppable climb to world dominance? In 12 engaging, half-hour lectures, The Rise of Modern Japan answers these questions and more, profiling the changing fate of Japan and the shifting mood of its people.
Noted Japan expert Professor Mark J. Ravina of the University of Texas at Austin covers the politics, economics, and culture of the island nation since World War II - a conflict that saw the end of Japan’s dream of regional conquest, which Professor Ravina calls Empire 1.0. The country’s postwar leaders radically changed course, renouncing a strong military to pursue Empire 2.0 - Japan as an economic colossus.
In fascinating detail, The Rise of Modern Japan shows how the United States, by design and by accident, built Japan into an economic rival, especially for high-value products such as cars and consumer electronics. If Americans misjudged their protégé, then the Japanese eventually misjudged their own markets, precipitating a stock and real estate collapse starting in the 1990s. Then in 2001, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck northern Japan, leading to widespread destruction and the Fukushima nuclear power disaster.
Professor Ravina uses the plots of popular Japanese movies and novels to illustrate how people coped with their jolting experiences: first defeat in war, followed by institutional revolution, unprecedented prosperity, crushing economic reversal, and natural and nuclear disaster. Despite also facing social instability and demographic challenges, the Japanese remained as focused, hardworking, and resilient as ever.

Understanding Contemporary Japan
Having previously listened to Dr. Ravina's "Understanding Japan: A Cultural History", this course offers a welcome expansion to the series. It focuses on Japan from the 1930s up to the present day (2020s), including recent developments.
I thorougly enjoyed the almost 6 hour long audiobook. Especially since it offered an insight into the events and people that shaped Japan into what it is today and also the challenges it is currently facing. I appreciated how Dr. Ravina conveyed the many connections and effects that the events since 1945 have to present Japan. Maybe even more so than in other countries , they still strongly influence current and possibly future developments. With many examples the later lectures give a glimpse into the struggles of contemporary japanese society on overcoming its past (WWII, Economic rise, Burst of the bubble...) and finding their new purpose and meaning.
Overall I can recommended the course to people interested in Japanese history, society and culture. It well complements "Understanding Japan: A Cultural History" and in the end gives the listener of both courses a holistic understanding of the traditional, as well as modern influences that make Japan what it is today. I feel this knowledge will considerably improve cross-cultural understanding and communication on part of the listeners.
On a quick last note: as the course progresses the structure changes slightly, mainly for the part after 1990. As history is still being written certain outcomes and interpretations are not as clear, because it historians still debate about it. I think Dr. Ravina, as a historian himself, did a great job here depicting a variety of sources and also opinions. But the last few lectures feel less like a "history lecuture" in the traditional sense and more like guided discussion, with the teacher explaining the different arguments. For me this was perfectly fine. Just to inform listeners to not expect a perfectly clear series, with all the conclusions up to 2021.

Starts well, ends awfully
Focused heavily on economy. Very weak on the rest. Only writer covered in detail is Abe Kobo. Mishima doesn't even get mentioned. Minus 2 stars for the awful conclusion at the end.
