This is a story about madness. It all starts when journalist Jon Ronson is contacted by a leading neurologist. She and several colleagues have recently received a cryptically puzzling book in the mail, and Jon is challenged to solve the mystery behind it. As he searches for the answer, Jon soon finds himself, unexpectedly, on an utterly compelling and often unbelievable adventure into the world of madness.
Jon meets a Broadmoor inmate who swears he faked a mental disorder to get a lighter sentence but is now stuck there, with nobody believing he’s sane. He meets some of the people who catalogue mental illness, and those who vehemently oppose them. He meets the influential psychologist who developed the industry standard Psychopath Test and who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are in fact psychopaths.

Very interesting insights
Really enjoyable listen on a fascinating topic. I'm a fan of Jon Ronson's journalism, he delivers his investigations in a very interesting and often humourous way. Really stimulates thought on this topic through his experiences with different people.

Interesting content, but bit hard to listen to
Writing as a non native speaker of English. Found it bit hard to follow in the audio version, as in some parts, there are a lot of names dropped and quick changes between them. For instance that chapter "The man who faked madness". Had to listen to parts of this chapter 4 or more times because without paying very close attention to who was talking about whom, I missed relevant hints and got lost repeatedly. Besides this, the way the author speaks lacks a bit of bandwidth/variability, at least for me, which made it additionally hard to preserve focus sometimes. Everything sounds somewhat similar in the way it's read and I sometimes struggled to determine whether the authors position was positive, negative or neutral by the way things were presented (example: those passages about Scientology in the beginning).
However, the content itself is interesting. I guess I'd prefer the book version over the audio version though if I had to buy it again.

Simply astonishing!
This audiobook was fascinating! I could hardly stop myself from listening to it in one sitting. Jon Ronson was very pleasant to listen to as always. I highly recommend this book!
