Über diesen Titel

From the New York Times best-selling author of Unaccountable comes an eye-opening, urgent look at America's broken health care system - and the people who are saving it.

One in five Americans now has medical debt in collections and rising health care costs today threaten every small business in America. Dr Makary, one of the nation's leading health care experts, travels across America and details why health care has become a bubble. Drawing from on-the-ground stories, his research and his own experience, The Price We Pay paints a vivid picture of price-gouging, middlemen and a series of elusive money games in need of a serious shake-up. Dr Makary shows how so much of health care spending goes to things that have nothing to do with health and what you can do about it. Dr Makary challenges the medical establishment to remember medicine's noble heritage of caring for people when they are vulnerable.

The Price We Pay offers a road map for everyday Americans and business leaders to get a better deal on their health care and profiles the disruptors who are innovating medical care. The movement to restore medicine to its mission, Makary argues, is alive and well - a mission that can rebuild the public trust and save our country from the crushing cost of health care.

American Greed

I like the book because it puts a lot more emotion into the issue. When he talks about the Americans who made too little to pay their bills but too much to apply for Medicaid that's talking about me as well. I like how he makes the book about people and their stories as opposed to numbers and statistics. I think the only thing that's hard for me to wrap my head around is the belief that people will do good. this was definitely an eye opener for me about the extremes to which the US healthcare system goes. I respect the author for his Goodwill and his efforts for change, but it's hard for me to believe that this alone will change the system. I think the call for transparency needs to come from the government because patients often don't have the time nor the know how to search out healthcare themselves. We don't know when a surgeon is worth the price and we , without experience or connections, don't have the abilities to find out. Even if one were to have connections and know-how, as the author does, the process is overwhelming and not one which could easily be done in a time of duress. the call needs to come from above and we need a president who is a good enough person to answer that call. We need the citizens to call for reforms which better reflect the EU system and we need to put regulations in place which make transparency a legal action instead of a consumer driven call. All in all I think this is a good first step in the right direction and the book was well written in displayed just how backwards the system is.
