Über diesen Titel
He'll die without touch.
As a necromancer, Shae loses a little more of himself every time he uses his magic. Always cold, always touch-starved, the only thing that helps is human contact. But that's hard to come by when those same dark powers scare everyone away from him. Nobody likes a necromancer.
Especially a paladin of the Radiant Order.
Arthur's still bitter and broken after his last lover stabbed him in the back, and the last thing he needs is another brush with evil. When he agrees to escort the wandering necromancer north, he's just doing a public service. But he never expected Shae to be so clingy. Or distractingly attractive.
Shae has never felt an aura as warm and safe as Arthur's. He craves the man's touch—and more. But everyone he's ever known has left him, and it's just a matter of time before Arthur leaves him too.
Assuming the soul-stealing monsters don't kill them first.
Contains mature themes.

Great story, but not so good narrator
I really liked the story and the characters, however the narrator was not as enjoyable to listen to. There were many noticeable pauses in sentences or dialogues. Moreover, there were several times where a swallowing could be heard audibly. As if the narrator was drinking.

Great story
Loved the Story... The recording was strange... Sometimes jumpy with odd pauses at the end of sentences

Definitely worth listening
The speaker has a very nice voice and you can easily distinguish between the different perspectives.
The story is really good and the character are relatable and if you love grumpyxsunshine this is exactlly your story.
For me it wasn't an outstanding story but still a pretty good one so 4 out of 5.

It's okay
I'll start this review by saying that I wouldn't have picked up the audio-book if it wasn't free.
I knew that the story wasn't entirely my cup of tea but I had hopes of getting drawn into a new universe. Sadly, the whole story was very "standard". It is a nice story. It's a nice writing style. But it doesn't have anything that sets it apart from other stories like this. I'm afraid that I'll have forgotten about ever listening to it within the next two months.
The voice acting is solid. You can easily differentiate between characters. Shae sounds a bit too whiney for me sometimes (it started to annoy me about halve-way in).
As someone else mentioned, the audio-book does have some cutting mistakes. There are some awkward pauses in it where you can hear the voice actor drink, move, or take a breath. At first I thought that it was an odd way of marking paragraphs - a short pause before a little time jump. But no, those awkward pauses also happen in the middle of dialogue.
It is distracting, even though I thought that it was oddly charming. It also did add in some much needed humor in some cases. It was really funny to hear one person talking, then an awkward pause and then the other person replying. I sort of hope that they won't change it, but they probably should.

Thoroughly mid
First of all I want to say that I do not think “The Necromancer’s Light” is a bad book. I just don’t think it’s a good one either. It’s a somewhat decent, short-lived way to pass some time if you don’t expect too much depth or logic.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The characters: The protagonists Shae and Arthur meet when the former’s looking for a bodyguard for his journey. Their relationship with each other largely follows the old “perpetually sunny character falls in love with perpetually grumpy, traumatized character” trope, which isn’t necessarily bad, but none of the two really seem to have much personality outside of that. Even after finishing the book I didn’t feel like I really knew either of them, they just weren’t fleshed out enough. Which isn’t that surprising considering that the whole book takes place over roughly the course of a month. Not much time to get to know someone. I didn’t dislike them but even though I could somewhat relate to Shae I still couldn’t form any real reader-character “bond” with them. It’s just all too shallow.
Which brings me to the next point. Their relationship progresses way, and I would actually say unnaturally, fast. Especially considering both their past lives and especially on Arthur’s side. The man basically *SPOILER* just got stabbed in the back by his former lover because he trusted him more and quicker than he should’ve and then he ends up risking his whole life and dream career for another guy he’s only known for a couple weeks. The marriage proposal at the end is the cherry on top of that slightly illogical cake. Doesn’t really make the fact that his ex managed to stab him in the back that surprising, to be fair.
Shae is opening up weirdly fast as well for someone who’s severely traumatized and used to be almost all by himself for 10 years, unused to even basic human contact and mostly isolated during formative years in his childhood. Telling Arthur secrets and traumas he’s apparently never told anyone before in those 10 years……after 3-4 weeks of knowing him. It just all feels kind of forced and a slower burn probably would’ve done this some good. *END OF SPOILER*
The world: Just like the characters the worldbuilding seems pretty flat. You get some little pieces of information about countries and different magics and monsters here and there but overall I never felt like I truly plunged into this world. I’m not saying I want to read page-long descriptions but there just wasn’t enough information about pretty much anything to really feel like part of this universe.
The combat: Not too much to say about that except that it seems slightly illogical at times as well, in the sense that Arthur seems to don some serious plot armor. He fights off beasts by pretty much himself that, in the second book, are said to be incredibly hard to take down, taking up to 3 paladins to fight just one of them. And this is before *SPOILER* he truly reconnects with his god. At one point, when he was surviving an encounter with 4 of them for an exceptionally long time before Shae could help out, I genuinely couldn’t envision how that would possibly work. Which was made even harder considering there’s very few information on Arthur’s magical combat abilities. It’s sometimes said that golden light (or divine power) protects his back or helps him fight but that’s largely the end of it. *END OF SPOILER*
The narrator: The narrator, albeit that’s probably even more up to personal taste, wasn’t exceptionally good or bad either. I sometimes felt like his narration was somewhat over the top, especially during spicier scenes. The cut also doesn’t seem to be that well done as you can often hear audible swallowing and longer pauses that don’t quite fit but it doesn’t take away too much from the better parts of the experience.
Conclusion: All in all it’s just very, very obvious that the somewhat rushed romance is the absolute main focus of the story, not their quest or the magical world they live in. It’s okay, it just isn’t great. Even with more focus on the former than the latter I simply would’ve liked a bit more balance there if these things are incorporated in the first place. And a bit more depth throughout the whole book, a little less rush. Alas, it’s definitely a “can read”, not a “must read”. Let’s see if the next one does better overall.
