The mindtwisting, deeply philosophical work of Cantor has its roots in ancient Greek mathematics and Jewish numerology as found in the mystical work known as the Kabbalah. Cantor's theory of the infinite is famous for its many seeming contradictions; for example, we can prove that in all time there are as many years as days, that there are as many points on a one-inch line as on a one-mile line.
While the inspiration for Cantor's mind-twisting genius lies in the very origins of mathematics, its meaning is still being interpreted. Only in 1947 did Kurt Gvdel prove that Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis is independent of the rest of mathematics - and that the foundations of mathematics itself are therefore shaky.

Tolle Mischung aus Wissenschaft und Biografie
Würden Sie The Mystery of the Aleph noch mal anhören? Warum?
Ich höre es gerade zum dritten Mal, allerdings nicht nur, weil die Geschichte so spannend ist, sondern auch, weil man die ganzen Formeln öfter hören muss, um folgen zu können und das Buch auch wirklich wissenschaftlich zu verstehen, wenn man nicht vom Fach ist.
Was mochten Sie an der Handlung am liebsten?
Die Verbindung von Biographie, Geschichte und Wissenschaft - ohne sich zu deutliche Annahmen über Ursache und Wirkung zwischen ihnen zu erlauben.
Wie hat Ihnen Henry Leyva als Sprecher gefallen? Warum?
Generell eine sympathische Stimme und sehr gut gelesen. Allerdings hätte ich schon erwartet, dass der Vorname der Hauptperson, Georg, nicht ständig als "Gerig" oder so ähnlich gesprochen wird.
Gab es im Hörbuch einen Moment, der Sie ganz besonders berührt hat?
Das Verständnis, dass es zwei Arten der Unendlichkeit gibt.
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
Wenn man Mathematik nicht mag, sollte man sich nicht abschrecken lassen, alles kann auch philosophisch verstanden werden.

testimony of a genius
this is without doubt one of the best books I know.
it's written and narrated by a genius and it tells the story about a genius.
furthermore, it brings to our mind the roots of our culture, which is based in the Kabbalah, summarizing the spiritual tradition of the orient.
with Cantor and many other Jews this spiritual tradition has travelled to Germany, where it germinated to bear the richest fruits in the world of modern science.
We all should bow in front of these processes in the development of mankind.
we all should be grateful for this book.
