Über diesen Titel

Includes all three books in the award-winning Mortal Techniques series.

Book One: Never Die.

Ein is on a mission from God...the God of Death. Time is up for the emperor of Ten Kings, and it falls to Ein, an eight-year-old boy, to render the judgement of the reaper. He can't do it alone, but luckily the world is full of travelling heroes. There's only one catch; in order to serve him, they must first die.

Book Two: Pawn's Gambit

Yuu wants nothing more than to forget the mistakes of her past. The gods have other plans. Once a renowned strategist and general five years ago, Yuu made a mistake that cost her everything. Now, she is on the run, royal bounty hunters snapping at her heels. But, what if there was a way to get back what she lost, a way to bring back a murdered prince? Every century, the gods hold a contest to choose who will rule from the heavenly Jade throne. Each god chooses a mortal champion, and the fate of all existence hangs in the balance. On a battlefield full of heroes, warriors, assassins, and thieves, can Yuu survive long enough to learn the rules of the game, let alone master it?

Book Three: Spirits of Vengeance

Haruto swore his soul to the God of Death for the chance to hunt down the vengeful ghost of his wife. He’ll die as many times as it takes. The Ipian Empire was once a land that welcomed dragons and spirits alike, but a century of war and bloodshed has seen them all but vanish. Now, the lost things are returning, and the Onryo have gathered. Five legendary spirits with mysterious powers, bent on freeing an ancient evil that would wreak havoc on humanity. As a plague of spirits sweeps across the land, the Onryo leave a bloody trail for Haruto to follow. But, who’s hunting who?

Fans of Will Wight and Andrew Rowe will love this energetic, anime-inspired trilogy.

Amazing asian mythology inspired fantasy

This first book in this bundle needed a bit to grow on me. At first it felt a bit too much like typical tropes and the characters felt like cardboard cutouts. It took quite a while until they started to break out of their shells and to feel more like actual people. (And in a way that even makes sense once you finished the book - which didn't help at the beginning of the book, when they felt pretty wooden to me.)
At the start it also felt a bit repetitive. Go somewhere, collect a hero, repeat.

Once they do get going and show their unique characters and personalities the story picks up. The plot slowly starts rolling and things start happening!

The second half was a really great read. Twists and turns - some I felt coming, some took me by surprise! I was hooked and more or less flew through the book. The characters finally grew on me and I actually cared about what happened to them! I liked to see them grow and flex and find their way. The world started to feel more real and the pace picked up a lot.

As I said above - looking back on the book, there's a reason why the book starts off "weak" and then progresses. It's quite a great concept - but if I didn't like the authors other books so much, I'm not sure I'd have kept reading long enough to get to that part. So it's really a two fold book for me. I'm glad I did trust the author, as it all paid of wonderfully in the end and I adored the book.

----------

The second and third books could easily be read as stand alones as well, and caught me right from the very start.

----------

Pawn's Gambit however had me hooked right from the start! The characters quickly grabbed me and dragged me along, and I enjoyed it very minute I got to spend in their company.

Seeing a main character who's strength lies in their tactics and not their fighting prowess gave the book a fresh and different tone.

The quick pace, action, banter and humour contrasted very well with deeper topics of trauma and fate and made for a very engaging read that was both thought provoking and entertaining. Hitting that balance is always a big plus for me.

Oh, and just like Never Die, this comes with some really nice twists and turns.

-----------

Spirits of Vengeance is a great conclusion to the story. Yet another completely different point of view, as we now follow a man who gets rid of dangerous spirits. We meet some well loved old characters again, though you don't need to have read any of the other books to understand it.
I once again loved the twists and turns and the amount of action and adventure. Though the book again lives from this contrasting with introspection and questions of moral. So it's not just a quick paced romp, but also makes you think and reflect on things.

-------------
All in all a bundle of three fantastic stories, which are very well narrated. Highly recommended!
