Inhaltsangabe
Once, this world was dominated by the fallen, but humanity cast off their tyrannical rule and created a mighty empire with colonies spread out across the globe. The power of the metropolis is stronger than ever before, but its past is dark and its future cloudy. Old secrets are capable of destroying in one moment what took years to create. After all, nothing can save it from treason, not armadas of battleships nor bomb-laden dirigibles.
The key to one such secret, by happenstance and inheritance, has fallen into the hands of Leopold Orso, a former police investigator who now works as a private detective. His illustrious talent allows him to bring other people's fears to life, but it also does not help him extricate himself from the web of another's scheming. Defeat threatens to result in imminent death. Victory beckons with the ghost of a chance to escape with his life. His soul is plagued by painstakingly forgotten memories. And to think that all Leopold ever wanted was to get an inheritance that was his by birthright.

Good Story ... But the narrator !
An intriguing world, where The Fallen (angels?) have recently been defeated, leaving many mysteries behind, an ambivalent main character with a dry humour, interesting side characters, a dose of Steampunk mixed with Magic, demons, werewolves, a leprechaun and a beautiful succubus. The story is a bit differently told than in the typical American way, I guess because the author is Eastern European(?), which I found rather refreshing. All in all, this would earn the first two books in this series 4.5 Stars from me. BUT: This narrator! Every. Single. Sentence. is emphasized in such a faux dramatic style that the whole story becomes almost Impossible to follow! When the story has a funny moment: Death-drama voice! A romantic scene: Horror-drama emphasis! Etc. Additionally, the speaker, Hellegers, also pauses senselessly in the middle or beginning or end of sentences without any discernable logical or dramatic reason. In a nutshell, you can trust this narrator to reliably choose the exact opposite style from what the story demands, and I had the distinct Impression that Neil Hellegers hadn't even read the text before recording. Which is really a shame, since Kornev, the author, clearly put a lot of work and thought in this story. The end of this book is in fact so intriguing, that I will buy the next part and make the effort to concentrate on the story behind and beyond the narrator's constant distraction of misinterpretations and misrepresentations. Still, a damn shame.
