Inhaltsangabe

Part manifesto, part whispered wake-up call, The Healthy Deviant is a modern-day survival guide for being a healthy person in a predominantly unhealthy world.

If you are finding health-improvement to be a challenging quest, you are not alone. Research suggests that currently, fewer than three percent of US adults are healthy, happy, and on track to stay that way. Despite unprecedented investments of time, energy, and money, the vast majority of people who chase health and happiness in our culture don't ever achieve them. Yet somehow, against all odds, a few healthy oddballs do. Some of them even make it look easy. The question is: How?

That's what this convention-busting audiobook sets out to explain. Drawing on more than two decades of scientific insight and real-life wisdom, award-winning health journalist Pilar Gerasimo shares the unlikely means by which a small but growing number of healthy outliers are managing to pull off the seemingly impossible - and how you can, too.

The Healthy Deviant rejects the idea that more prescriptions for "diet and exercise" alone can save us - or even that they are the best places to start. Instead, by combining insights from psychology, evolutionary biology, and functional medicine, Gerasimo (founding editor of Experience Life magazine and co-host of The Living Experiment podcast) invites us to reclaim our vitality by embracing bold new patterns and perspective shifts, and by breaking away from the counterproductive efforts that have been wearing us down.

With a transformative 14-Day Healthy-Deviant Adventure program, plus original infographics, self-assessments, and a collection of fun, interactive tools (available in a supplemental PDF and downloadable bonus toolkit), this thought-provoking audiobook will change your whole approach to health improvement, set you on an inspired new path, and put you happily back in charge of your own well-being. Starting now.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Trivial, unspecific, extremely wordy and redundant

This is the first audiobook in my life I have ever regretted listening to.
Please don't expect to learn any specific, useful protocols or routines to follow that go beyond the trivial.
The advice stays on a very general, vague level, no hands-on tips. For hours the author explains the unhealthiness of modern Western life, but let's be honest, if you are interested in buying this (audio)book you already know that.
People need to move more, eat healthier, sit less, etc. - but the author fails to show how exactly you could incorporate more movement into your life, let alone tells you what kind of movement you should practice.
To give an example on the triviality of the content: the author's revolutionary advice on how to pursue continuous growth and learning:
"- Reading books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, and scientific journals
- Taking courses, seminars and workshops
- Watching videos and documentary films {...}"
I'm not kidding, it's that trivial. Chapter titles that look promising, turn out to be completely disappointing, e.g "Your Healthy Deviant Toolkit" mostly consists of a collection of links to the author's (fee-based) app, seminars, a toolkit web page (for which you need to subscribe with your email address first), articles, etc. This audiobook here on the other hand gives such revolutionary insights like "take a break" or "get enough sleep" - never heard about that (sorry for the sarcasm).
If you are interested in useful information and insights, check out Katie Bowman's "Move your DNA" (for movement related topics), listen to the podcast of Dr. Andrew Huberman (for all things health), listen to selected episodes from The Minimalists (practical tips on simplifying life) and read John C. Parkin's books (for the right attitude).

On a positive note: the author has a nice reading voice that's engaging and motivating, it could almost make you believe you actually learn something. I regret having listened to this audiobook when I think about the valuable time I have wasted. How you can actually convey so little in over 11 hours is a somewhat impressive feat (kudos!). You get bombarded with terminology the author invented in order to give the impression that you listen to something innovative (e.g. "Unhealthy Default Reality" (UDR), that gets repeated ad nauseam).
The entire content could have been condensed into a free 1 hour podcast episode.

Sorry for the lengthy review (not by far as lengthy as the audiobook though).
