Children in an Apocalyptic World
What a story. Heart breaking, powerful, thrilling and intelligently written. Best fiction I read in a while.
It is difficult to classify this book. It is science fiction, but it does not throw a lot of nonsensical science at you. Yes, there are something like Zombies in the story, but it is very different from something like "the walking dead".
I do not want to give away too much and this makes it very difficult to review the book. A lot of the fascination of the book is derived from the slow revelation of the terrible truth. Every time you think, it can't be that bad, it is getting worse.
It is the story of Melanie, an unusual young girl, growing up in an extremely bizarre environment. Most of the time, hand cuffed and strapped in a chair, she is locked up in a prison like facility and spends her time in class with some other kids or in her little cell. She is smart and learns very fast and she is fascinated to hear about a world outside of her personal experience, because she never left the confinement of the classroom and her little sleeping cubicle. The highlight of her life are the lessons with her favorite teacher Ms. Justineau, who is really nice and Melanie would do anything for her.
Life would not be so bad, if there were not the guards, who are cruel sometimes and Ms. Caldwell, a scientist, who does nasty things to the kids. Melanie does not really know, what is going on, but sometimes kids disappear and do not come back. And then, things really go crazy...
It is a great story, read it.

Outstanding
From all end-of-the-world stories, this is one of the greatest. Intense, gripping, read with a wonderful British accent.

Simply amazing!

Ein weiterer Roman in diesem Genre
Aber er hat mir gut gefallen.
Ich will nicht Spoilern aber empfehle den Kauf.
Mindestanzahl an Wörtern ist eine tolle Idee, Audible.

Bisschen gruselig, bisschen viel Wissenschaft

excellent
After quite a long while finally a book again with an captivating story and excellent reader. I thought I was through with Zombie stories, but that really stands out.
Ich bin wirklich froh, dieses Buch auf Englisch gehört zu haben. Nie im Leben wäre ich auf die Idee gekommen ein Buch zu kaufen, welches "die Berufene" heißt, was für ein bescheuerter Titel ist das denn!!? Egal wie gut die Rezensionen sind.

Magically well written
A new world unfolds in front of you as you learn simultaneously with the protagonist about your surroundings, trying to make sense of it bit by bit with the help of the imagination kindling words of this brilliant author. Thanks for this experience!

eines der besten Hörbucher aller Zeiten!
grandios! kunstvoll erzählt, spannend bis zum Ende. eine fantastische Zombie - apokalypse , aber anders als alles, was es sonst so zu diesem thema gibt. philosophischer, nachdenklich und einfach sehr sehr gut geschrieben! auch die Sprecherin ist großartig. absolute empfehlung!

Incredible, unique story
It’s the wonderful, frightening journey of a girl, in her right and the struggles of coming to terms with the darker parts of who we are.

Kind of zombie apocalypse story
I was recommended the book and didn't quite check the storyline beforehand, my bad. I'm not particularly into zombie stories, so it wasn't really up my aisle. I didn't hate it though.
So if you like this kind of stories (with some gross imagery), this book is for you. (And yes, I know it's not actually about zombies but close enough.)
