The Diary of Anaïs Nin is the published version of Anaïs Nin's own private manuscript diary, which she began at age 11 in 1914 during a trip from Europe to New York with her mother and two brothers. Nin would later say she had begun the diary as a letter to her father, Cuban composer Joaquín Nin, who had abandoned the family a few years earlier.
Over the years, the diary would become Nin's best friend and confidante. Despite the attempts of her mother, therapists Rene Allendy and Otto Rank, and writer Henry Miller, to break Nin of her dependence on the diary, she would continue to keep a diary up until her death in 1977.
As early as the 1930s Nin had sought to have the diary published. Due to its size (in 1966, the diary contained more than 15,000 typewritten pages in some 150 volumes) and literary style, she would not find a publisher until 1966, when the first volume of her diary would be published, covering the years 1931 - 1934 in her life. The published version of her diary would be very popular among young women, making Nin a feminist icon in the 1960s. Six more volumes of her diary would follow.

Deeply Feminine Anais Nin

Unabridged, gripping but not unexpurgated
Passionate reading, beautiful voice with a real french accent. Maybe a little bit too much in one style or emotion though. I wanted to hear these diaries, because I wanted to get to know the person of Nin and the cultural scene she was in. And I did get to know the backgrounds of for example Henry Miller and Otto Rank. It was for me a new access to the ideals and struggles of herself and the artists she knew and to early psycholanalysis, of which I very much like the artistic, free and individual approach of the psychoanalist. The only criticism I have: This is an edition which is not unexpurgated! For Nin was married to the banker Hugh Parker Guiler and when the diaries where published in 1966 he didn't want certain passages in it. For example: The marriage is not mentioned at all and you don't get to know Nin had physical relationships with Henry Miller, his wife June, her analysts Allendy and Rank, her own father, that she had an abortion etc. Also when she is pregnant there's no father named. A shame that only the unabridged and not the unexpurgated diaries (which were published after her death from 1986 onwards by Rupert Pole, the one of the two simultanious husbands who outlived her) were read by Lagelée. Nevertheless I rate this reading and the contents with five stars.

Interpretation vs the story
Very interesting book, but terrible performance. I don’t understand why the reader deliver us the story in such romantic manner. I also don’t understand the idea of trying to read with different voices, faking Henry Miller and other characters that appear. I could hardly finish the book because of such terrible interpretation.
