Richard Armitage modernizes a classic hidden gem of Christmas Past… Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John. The season takes flight with merriment, warmth, and even affection, until Moppet - as young children are wont to do in Victorian holiday tales - falls deathly ill. With her life hanging by a tinsel-thin thread, how will the makeshift family cope?
Listeners who smile ironically at the antiquated juxtaposition of The Christmas Hirelings might be surprised by the contemporary feel of a blended family, income inequality, and the power of togetherness to heal past sorrows. Richard Armitage’s stellar voice makes each scene as rich as a plum pudding dotted with the raisins of tradition (party favors, carols, and more!), and the entire performance feels like a trip to bygone England…just in time for the end of this year.

More upbeat than expected
Strong performance by Armitage on a warming Victorian Christmas tale. Braddon provides evocative scenery and perspectives. Very tight narration and voice for the overall plot.

Gut gesprochen und ebenso gut geschrieben fehlt es dem Buch dennoch an Tiefgang. Die Handlung ist zu klischeehaft-voraussehbar und plätschert gemütlich dahin.
Gute Bettlektüre und grade in der Weihnachtszeit entspannend zu hören. Handwerklich gut, aber es fehlt einfach der Pfiff.

Lovely story, wonderful performance
Really sweet feel-good story performed by fantastic narrator. None of the voices of the characters he performs are annoying, everything is delivered perfectly.

Sweet story, fantastic narrator
This is a feelgood and awwww-story, just right for the holidays but it will work well at any time of the year, really. It's a bit like "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and "Heidi" and all of the stories where children melt the hearts of bitter and lonely old men, not all that original but well told with believable characters and a back story that serves as the grain of salt to save the story from being sticky-sweet.
Richard Armitage's narration is superb, as always, and he tells the story with a smile that is audible in his voice. What a very lovely audiobook, and I'm going to revisit again and again!

Adorably sweet - and perfectly narrated
If you like, with the spirit of Christmas and at that time of the year, stories like Little Lord Fauntleroy, you‘ll like this one.
It‘s a sweet little story, that‘s not very original, extremely predictable, there is no edge of the seat moment, but in the spirit of Christmas - like Little Lord Fauntleroy so masterfully showed how to - sweet little kids melting hardened and lonely hearts… the odd scene might even make you well up.
Richard Armitage - as always - with his expressive voice and charm is the perfect choice. I loved it… it‘s Christmas after all 😉

Christmas!
Schöne, fast kitschige Geschichte, die perfekt in die Weihnachtszeit passt. Richard Armitage souverän wie immer, er spricht auch die Kinder "very moving". Seine dunkle Stimme unterstreicht natürlich die männliche Hauptperson bestens. Wie er den Wechsel zwischen vierjährigem Mädchen und altem Mann liest, ist faszinierend!
