Über diesen Titel

Millions of listeners worldwide are discovering the special world of Bruno, Chief of Police, and the Dordogne Mysteries. There's murder in paradise in the 12th case for France's favourite cop in this addition to a beloved series.

A missing art student. An international investigation. A secret that will shatter Bruno's charming village of St Denis.

A rich American art student is found dead at the bottom of a well in an ancient hilltop castle. The young woman, Claudia, had been working in the archives of an eminent French art historian, a crippled Resistance war hero, at his art-filled chateau.

As Claudia's White House connections get the US Embassy and the FBI involved, Bruno traces the people and events that led to her fatal accident - or was it murder?

Bruno learns that Claudia had been trying to buy the chateau and art collection of her tutor, even while her researches led her to suspect that some of his attributions may have been forged. This takes Bruno down a trail that leads him from the ruins of Berlin in 1945, to France's colonial war in Algeria.

The long arm of French history has reached out to find a new victim, but can Bruno identify the killer - and prove his case?

Not all of it as good as usual

I love "Bruno" for the journalistic parts on past & present France. These were as good & satisfying as always.
But then after I was made to suffer thru the Mills&Boon chapter "Pamela seduces" I was so angry that the denouement left me with more questions than answers.. By now I wonder whether the sex-how-to-chapter was introduced to lessen attention to the wobbly denouement.
I hope the next Bruno will resist giving me more sex how to lessons. That is not the liberation from the catch the author has written himself into with Bruno's love life.

Warning to the author:
having one of them killed is unacceptable to me, as is Bruno discovering his homosexual leanings or him getting castrated during one of his athlete style investigations or while cooking. Him discovering his monkish leanings & taking chastity vows would not really satisfy me either.
Do some thinking!!!

The three pillars of Bruno

For fans of the series each summer brings a new instalment, perfectly performed by Peter Noble. The pace in this new one is a bit slower, but again it is no disappointment.

In the Bruno-novels our protagonist is usually faced with three major themes. The first is history and France has almost too much of it, from ancient to colonial times and contemporary problems stemming from them. This is the interesting part.

Then there is food and the way it is prepared and celebrated in sometimes almost sacred rituals. This is the mouth-watering part.

And there are the women Bruno has relationships with. This is the hopeless part, especially in this novel when some old relationships are revisited. Quite often in the tale there are references to earlier books of the series and so novices to the world of St. Denis might be a bit baffled.
