'PEOPLE THINK THAT STORIES ARE SHAPED BY PEOPLE. IN FACT, IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.'

At the time of his death in 2015, award-winning and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett was working on his finest story yet - his own.

At six years old, Terry was told by his headteacher that he would never amount to anything. He spent the rest of his life proving that teacher wrong. At sixty-six, Terry had lived a life full of achievements: becoming one of the UK's bestselling writers, winning the Carnegie Medal and being awarded a knighthood for services to literature.

Following his untimely death from Alzheimer's disease, the mantle of completing Terry's memoir was passed to Rob Wilkins, his former assistant, friend and now head of the author's literary estate.

Drawing on his own extensive memories, along with those of Terry's family, friends, fans and colleagues, Rob recounts Terry's extraordinary story - from his early childhood to the literary phenomenon that his Discworld series became; and how he met and coped with the challenges that 'The Embuggerance' of Alzheimer's brought with it.

A celebration of a life well lived.

The book is a wonderful look into how Terry Pratchett became the literary giant I knew him as. It details Pratchetts life, unashamedly colored through the lenses of a close friend. it doesn't shy away from discussing that, while indubitably a brilliant author, Pratchett also had his sharp edges. It manages a tactful, yet insightful, look into the later years, when Terry's life was cruelly foreshortened by his brain, in effect, setting fire to itself. It is a celebration of an extraordinary life, made by a Pratchett fan, for Pratchett fans. I happen to be in the demographic.

GNU

I listened to the last chapters while cycling through the fields near my hometown. It was getting close to sunset (how appropriate, how stagey) when Rob Wilkins ended with the epiloge. At this stage I could have done without the Audible end credits. 2kms of silence. Then I started to cry. I kept cycling. I kept crying. And as there were about 5 kms to go before I'd be home, I was so very glad that I had one or two (or possibly more) Discworld novels on my smartphone. I chose "Equal Rites". The combination of not-quite-young-anymore Granny Weatherwax and very young Eskarina seemed a good antidote.

Thank you for this story about Terry Pratchett (I almost feel like calling him Terry after listening to the whole book but I don't quite dare).

Extraordinary

Did not read his books so far, will do now. Impressive author, well known. If you disagree: write his name wrong, even Autocorrect know him - that’s true fame!

Humorous and sad

This story has no happy end, as life is not Hollywood and does not always give us happy endings. However this (audio) book can take you on a marvelous journey! I felt that close to this magnificent author as would not have imagined.
And hearing some of the stuff that Terry Prattchett was involved in made me actually appreciate his last books as well as the posthumously released TV Series "The Watch" even more than before. And most of the critics should maybe stfu.

Laugh and cry

This book, like many of Pratchetts work, made me laugh, cry, ponder and sit in amazement. I have loved Pratchetts books for 25 or so years, and having Rob read this biography gave me the feeling to get to know him even more than through his books. He surely was no easy and straight forward human, but he was clearly caring and driven and insanely talented. I loved this book, even though I spend the last chapters of it sobbing.
