Über diesen Titel
A violent storm sweeps through California, taking on a life of her own. Making her way from the Pacific Coast, she gains momentum as she approaches the Sierra and transforms into a blizzard of great strength, covering mountain ranges and roads with twenty feet of snow. Originally published in 1941, Storm is a rare combination of fiction and science by a master storyteller, drawing upon a deep knowledge of geography, meteorology, and human nature.
"In Storm we are far from freeways, from megapopulation, from sprawl, from beach TV, from stress, from road rage. And we are in touch with a much deeper reality. Of land and water and weather, of humans huddled together on the planet in a dark universe." —Ernest Callenbach, in the foreword

Meteorology in Life
I have neither heard of the book nor about the author before buying it. Even when reading the description now, I cannot understand why I have chosen to buy this book. But I did and got entertained.
The voice of the reader is very spirited, sometimes too modulated for me in order to listen to him for a longer period. However, I think the spirited reading fits well the contents of the book, which describes several aspects of a weather situation by individual experiences. All is done in small episodes, like lurid newspaper articles. Since I looked up, that this book was written in 1942, it is probably one of the oldest books that I know using this kind of story-telling. It tries to address all kind of readers, which is one of its weaknesses.
The book is about a big storm after a long drought. It starts with the meteorologists and then concentrates to Americans experiencing traffic situations affected by this storm. The author describes situations and people very detailed, more detailed than necessary to understand the situation, but the details seem being told to explain these people's behaviour. When hearing some of the stories, I imagined a wagging forefinger of the author telling us from situations in that he had suffered of other people's stupidity and ignorance. Nevertheless, it was entertaining.
My interest was meteorolgy, when buying this book. It gives you some hints and uses right technical terms in a correct context. You may also start to understand the weather sciences and maybe start getting fascinated. I am already fascinated of investigating and forecasting the weather. But my personal experience and responsiblity when flying and sailing started my interest in this science, already before reading this book.
I guess I expected the book to be the next volume of "The Weather Experiment", which it is not. "Storm" is entertainment including several aspects of normal life, science and administration. It does not tell history, but presents the situation at a historical point in time, where no weather satellites were available and individuals transferred their readings more or less reliable to the weather bureau.
