Story suffers from the mediocre narrator

The story could be a good start for a larger series, not epic by any means, but good entertainment.
What I like most is the "hero" has to suffer and makes a lot of bad decisions because of his ego.
Unfortunately the narrator is not the right one for this kind of story. He does his job line by line without captivating his audience in the least.
