Very good first audiobook of the novels

As an "old" veteran of this genre i am normally not getting easily impressed anymore. But this audiobook and and the novels are seriously a gem.

The main character is well written. Despite being strong he is levelheaded and behaves like a prince /king. He does not simply belives in the "power of friendship" but is a good politician who tries to solve problems like a real leader. Including all the hard choices.

The cast of the female members is well written too. They have all differrent personalities without being copies of each other.

Finally the voice actors are really doing a great job. The male voice actor is giving the prince a "regal" tone while the voice actress is doing great in voicing all the different women in this novel.

5 of 5 stars for this audiobook (Novel)

It gets better

It started out pretty rough, with elaborate but entirely uninspiring and uninteresting lore. It attempts badly to somewhat present a system of Nobels and royals but it’s not at all clear or believable. Neither is the wider world itself.

The main characters motivations are constantly overexposed. Rather than elaborating only when strictly necessary, it is constant. This only makes the main character more boring and insufferable.

He does always come off as kind of bland, but towards the second half, there’s some decent attempts to give him a personality.

Unfortunately he only has very artificial moments of weakness and is mostly inoffensively competent and boring.

All the characters are like that in the beginning but improve towards the end, where some of the lore actually gets better and even has pay offs from earlier sections. A lot of it still doesn’t pay off ever.

The biggest problem is how long it is. On one hand, it’s quite generous as it could easily have been 3 novels and apparently quite a lot of the story is included in this first volume.

But on the other hand, the book would really benefit from telling the same story much much shorter.

The erotic moments were mostly very crass. I don’t have an issue with that in general or with swears etc as long as they are used in the right context.
This book does not do that and it ruins the experience at times. Some erotic and romantic moments are better.

Lastly the narrators are better than this book deserves.
They mostly do a fine job but could have done with better directing, as sometimes the delivery doesn’t match the mood of the moment.

Why three stars?

Because it gets better, because the production is quite good, because there’s some genuine care put into this world.
It might be that it’s not quite worth digging for it, it might be that too much focus was put on exploring things that aren’t interesting, clever or relevant.

If you want a power fantasy, this is what this book is unapologetically.
