NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time travel, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.
One of the Best Books of the Year: The New York Times, NPR, GoodReads
“One of [Mandel’s] finest novels and one of her most satisfying forays into the arena of speculative fiction yet.” —The New York Times
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.
Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him.
When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.
A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.

"In Sea of Tranquility, Mandel offers one of her finest novels and one of her most satisfying forays into the arena of speculative fiction yet, but it is her ability to convincingly inhabit the ordinary, and…project a sustaining acknowledgment of beauty, that sets the novel apart…Born of…empathy and hard-won understanding, beautifully built into language, for all of us who inhabit this ‘green-and-blue world’ and who one day might live well beyond." —Laird Hunt, The New York Times
"Sea of Tranquility is broader in scope than any of Mandel’s previous novels, voyaging profligately across lands and centuries…Destabilizing, extraordinary, and blood-boiling…Mandel weds a sharp, ambivalent self-accounting—the type of study that tends to wear the label ‘autofiction’—to a speculative epic. We are shown what two forms can offer each other, and exposed to the interrogating possibilities of science fiction." —Katy Waldman, The New Yorker

Conventional though well told time travel novella
Before you read this review you have to know that I am a fan of Emily St John Mandel's work. Literally in the original sense of the word: a fanatical admirer. Please pick up "The Lola Quartet", "Last Night in Montreal" and especially "The Glass Hotel". You will find people there: desperate, caring, lost, struggling, brave. You will be taken on their journeys and learn very much about what makes all of us human.
That is why this well done novella leaves me disappointed. It only hints at the real qualities of the author. At some point it struck me as an experiment in writing: "Let's see if I can do time travel scifi." Well, you can, but others have been there before.
The story brushes the Glass Hotel - but do not mistake this work as a sequel. In fact, Sea of Tranquility had the potential of destroying a marvelous story on how people deal with a huge lie, how they close their eyes, how they get fooled, how they cover up - really great literature. Had St John Mandel chosen to make this part of a scifi-story it would have been a shame. She doesn't. She just takes some characters and motives out of the Glass Hotel to blend then into something entirely different. Maybe St. John Mandel has plans to go the way of Balzac, intertwining all her books. I would discourage this course of action.
All that being said: It is enjoyable reading, well written and intelligent. I liked it, but I did not love it.

not sure what to make of it
I've been half way hooked, not gonna lie, but now that it's finished I'm just like "and what?"

Characters are horrible
I bought the audiobook after a lot of celebrities including president obama recommended it.
The book would have been significantly better if the characters above all mirella olive and gaspery weren’t so intolerable.

Absolutely brilliant
Tis time-travel story is multi-layered and spans several centuries told from to POV of several protagonists - who have four different voices / performers as the story progresses to a conclusion that is logical in retrospect. Of those performers Kirsten Potter deserves a special mentioning, but all of them touch the listener deeply.
It will be interesting to see if this novel will be recognized in the form of nominations to the Hugo and Nebula awards. Thumbs up!
