annoying and frustrating

In book 1 and at the start of book 2 the protagonist wins every fight until he starts to train to get stronger, then suddenly he loses every fight. It's also extremly annoying how he always talks about protecting everybody but then leaves so many advantages for his attackers, especially his ex lover. It also gets really old that his enemies can always surprise him and pretty much always know where he is and what he does while he gets the information he needs only after the ambushes already happened.
