Inhaltsangabe

England is overrun by dragons of all shapes and sizes. Most people are blissfully unaware of them and the Pendragon Treaty that keeps the peace between human and dragon kind. Only those born with preternatural hearing, like Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are able to hear and converse with dragonkind.

When the first firedrake egg laid in a century is stolen from Pemberley, the fragile dragon peace teeters on collapse. Darcy has no choice but to chase down the thief, a journey that leads him to quaint market town of Meryton and fellow Dragon Keeper, Elizabeth Bennet.

Elizabeth shares a unique bond with dragons, stronger than anything Darcy has ever experienced. More than that, her vast experience and knowledge of dragon lore may be the key to uncovering the lost egg. But Elizabeth can’t stand Darcy’s arrogance and doesn’t trust him to care properly for a precious baby firedrake. After all, he already lost the egg once. What’s to prevent it from happening again?

Can he win her trust and recover the stolen egg before it hatches and sends England spiraling back into the Dark Ages of Dragon War?

Jane Austen meets Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. A must-listen for Pern fans.

Amusing and entertaining

The story is a fun variation of Pride and Prejudice, the story itself is given some nice twists, and it is entertaining enough to be read/listened to several times, not just once.
The writing leaves a little to be desired now and then, Darcy tends to say something, and then do something in an exaggerated manner with his hands, pinching the bridge of his nose, covering his eyes, even hitting his forehead at some point or something completely OTT. The language threw me out of my willing suspension of disbelief several times, like when "freshman" was mentioned. Worst of all was the frequent mention of Muntjac deer in the woods. Muntiac deer weren't living wild around in the woods of Regency England. I am aware that no dragons were around, either, but it is an anachronism to have muntjac - or it shows ignorance of the time and place where and when this story is supposedly set. You could just as well give the characters cars and mobile phones then.
But the story is captivating, and I found myself buying, reading, and enjoying all the sequels, too, without regrets!

As far as the audiobook goes, the reader annoyed me considerably. He mispronounces ALL the place names (Longurn, Durby shyre, Hurtford shyre) pronounces many words in a very weird way, the vowels especially, with a horribly fake English accent. The way he pronounces "women ("whamman") eventually made me want to throw my phone against the wall. He gives Elizabeth a constant, inane titter, and while the fairy dragons are supposed to have a high, twittery voice, it is painful to listen to the highpitched voice he gives them. BUT if he had used his natural (I am guessing American?) accent, he would probably have annoyed me cosiderably less. He is good at giving distinct voices to characters so that you tend to know who is talking without being told.
