Über diesen Titel

Organizing Solutions for People with ADD, 2nd Edition outlines new organizing strategies that will be of value to anyone who wants to improve their organizational skills. This revised and updated version also includes tips and techniques for keeping your latest technologies in order and for staying green and recycling with ease.

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are prevalent in society today, afflicting about 4.4 percent of the adult population - over 13 million Americans. Four out of every five adults do not even know they have ADD.

The chapters, organized by the type of room or task, consist of practical organizing solutions for people living with ADD:

  • At work: prioritizing, time management, and organizing documents
  • At home: paying bills on time, decluttering your house, scheduling and keeping appointments
  • With kids: driving them to various activities, grocery shopping and meals, laundry, babysitters, organizing drawers and closets
  • And you: organizing time for your social life, gym, and various other hobbies and activities

It really made me want to organise my home and I'm in decluttering mode.
Quite a few good mantras to memorise and implement when my motivation wanes.

Excellent Tipps

The book is suited for ADHD and non ADHD minds alike, as most advise is equally applicable. I appreciate that it still has a few thoughts that apply especially to ADHD behaviours and thinking, like the idea that any action that takes a few smaller tasks might be a disadvantage for somebody with ADHD to achieving a well organized household.
So the take away for me is: make necessities of everyday life as easy and convenient as possible, and reduce the number of objects in your household to "as many as needed, but as few as possible". That isn't news to me, I've found a lot of the tips that are given myself already. But it's still a good collection.

The only thing that bothered me were the few parts recommending to arrange something so your spouse with ADHD can deal with it more easily (e.g. the part about kitchen trash). I personally wouldn't want to see a non ADHD partner as responsible to do that for the other one. The ADHD part needs to be encouraged to create own solutions that fit individually. For this, the book has some good recommendations.

Good advise, understands ADHD minds but also useful for anybody else

There are some nuggets of wisdom here. I like her approach that focuses on practicality rather than aesthetics. Some of the suggestions, however, are not relatable or even super ridiculous. For example, I don’t really know who is keeping their office work in their kitchen, but apparently this is a big problem to address. She also suggests buying multiple nightstands or cabinets or adding shelving units to the bathroom - if you have space for this, you can probably afford to hire someone to declutter for you. All this instruction to buy more things, while railing against consumerism! She assumes that ADHD people will just creatively make do without all the things they need but throw away in the name of decluttering, but we definitely need to buy a lot more shelves and containers.

What bothers me most about this Audiobook, however, is the narration. Not only is the content itself condescending but the narrator speaks every single sentence in a very dry and condescending tone of voice. It was very hard to keep listening, feeling like I was being lectured by a grade school teacher.

It’s ok
