Inhaltsangabe

The Danish concept of hygge is a wonderful thing. Even if most fail miserably when they try to pronounce or explain its true essence. Unless you’re a viking, of course.

As Keri stood in the departure lounge of Auckland International Airport with her four-month-old baby searching for her flight on the board, hygge wasn’t on her radar. In hindsight, she agrees it probably should have been. But she’d never imagined a chance encounter with a Dane in a crowded bar in her home city of Wellington would lead her here, a mother, about to circle the globe, with no knowledge of when she'd return home.

Eighteen thousand kilometres away, a new life awaited her in Denmark. A country where babies sleep outside, the word for bread is seemingly impossible to pronounce, and a country in which immigration challenges abound.

A witty observer of cultural nuances, Keri reveals the day-to-day realities of a New Zealander living her best life in Denmark. From integration interrogations to rye bread misdemeanors, Nothing Like a Dane provides a humorous and heartfelt insight into creating a new life in a faraway land.

And what did she learn? That it’s not all hygge and pastries. Even in Denmark.

Funny, real-life insights from a newcomer to Denmark

Having a hard time adjusting to life in Denmark when I moved here, „Nothing like a Dane“ proved to be a game-changer.
It greatly helped me to understand where I had landed myself and why people around me were behaving in inexplicable ways.

Keri made me trust myself again and realize that it is okay and normal to feel lost when moving to a new and sometimes very different culture. Even having read her book I can only imagine how challenging it must be for newcomers from overseas when even I, who was raised across the border in Germany, encountered many baffling obstacles.

I highly recommend „Nothing like a Dane“ to anybody who is about to move to Denmark or has recently moved here and wants the perspective of a fellow „newcomer“.

My husband has listened to it too with many an aha moment. We both cannot wait to hear or read how the story continued…

Poorly researched opinion about 'Viking-land'

I have to admit that the book is funny at times, but its just a shame that the book is coloured by the authors inherent negativity. The way she uses 'viking' to describe anything Danish ends up being repetitive and condescending.
Also the book is clearly based mainly on the experiences from living with 'the Dane' and is full of half truths that serve the authors agenda to criticize everything.
Just one example. It must be envy that leads her to claim that a Master's degree is the norm in Viking-land, when the actual number is only 10,4%.
The author should really try to work on her negative approach to everything different. Again and again she describes how a situation is the worst moment in her life, e.g. going to the supermarket, having dinner sitting down, going to the swimming pool or dancing around the Christmas tree. Uhhh horrible things!!!
I feel sorry for her boyfriend/husband, 'the Dane', for whom she clearly expresses no love.
The conclusion is that the books says way more about the author than it does about Denmark and that's not really interesting.
