Not my father's son
Nie hat mich eine Autobiographie so in den Bann gezogen wie Not my father's son von Alan Cumming. Dieser Mann ist einfach wundervoll. Trotz all der traumatischen Erlebnisse, ist aus ihm ein toller Mensch geworden.
Zwar ist dieser Roman voller trauriger und erschreckender Themen, dennoch hat Alan es geschafft, dass ich mehrmals herzhaft lachen konnte.

Mutig, fesselnd, fantastisch gelesen!
Alan Cumming kennt man aus 'The Good Wife', 'X-Men 2', als Hörbuch-Sprecher und Shakespeare-Mimen.
Sein NOT MY FATHER'S SON ist die packendste Künstler-Autobiographie, die ich jemals gehört oder gelesen habe. Hier schmeichelt sich ein Star nicht selbst, sondern er holt ehrlich, bestürzend und mutig seine gewalttätige Familiengeschichte ans Tageslicht. Das ist erschreckend, packend und spannend wie ein Krimi. Ein paar Prisen gewitzter Humor und kindliche Albernheit erhellen die Düsternis. Dass Alan Cumming seine Memoiren selber vorliest, macht NOT MY FATHER’S SON zu einem noch intensiveren Erlebnis: Diese markante Stimme, dieses furiose Schottisch vergisst man nie wieder.

Disappointing
I was captivated by this story and Cumming’s ability to paint a scene, at least at first. By the later chapters, I started to notice how much time he spent telling of his exhaustion, how many times he built up tension only to let it all go in a rather anticlimactic turn, how much he tended to rant repetitively and dwell on all things negative. I don’t mean the trauma - that I can understand dwelling on. I mean the side-story about the extended family members and the drama of all of the apparently shocking revelations involved. It’s one thing to tell your friends these things and expect it to have meaning for them. As a book, it felt, by the end, like an excuse to be melodramatic, woe-is-me, navel-gazing. It was painful, reading his diary like this. I don’t recommend spending money on it. If you have the time, the first half of the book is interesting enough...
