Über diesen Titel

After its publication in 1962, Harry M. Caudill’s acclaimed portrait of the southern Appalachian Mountains became a rallying cry for action against the poverty plaguing the region. Here Caudill explores the area’s history, from its first settlement to the Civil War, and from the rise of coal barons to the economic despair of the 1950s and 1960s.

Harry Caudill wrote this deep, well researched and haunting history of the brutal beginning, the short bout of hope and the onset of an unsettling decay, the past and present - as well as future - of the Cumberland Plateau. A place which stands emblematic for other regions, not just in North America but throughout the World, that were and still are exploited for their resources, as long as there are any, and then left to their own devices, with virtually zero hope for the people or what little remains of them. Caudill describes in great detail, the failure of the many institutions and how their mistakes, lack of respect and the seemingly endless ignorance of mankind, doomed the people of the Appalachians to a futile, or even worse, a totally hopeless existence. In this book one finds much wisdom, great writing, real insight and heartfelt passion for the plight that befalls the people and the region.

Great rendering of a truly great book.
