The story, like many of the author’s other works, is beautifully written. She has a real talent for words and knows how to build rich, immersive worlds. Her descriptions of life at the royal court are detailed and elegant, and you can tell she puts great care into every scene.
However, I can only give this book three stars. The main character felt plain, naïve, and superficial. I really tried to connect with her and gave the story plenty of time, but she remained unlikable and lacking in depth. Despite the lush setting, there’s simply not enough happening, too much focus on clothing, jewelry, and luxury, and too little plot or emotional development.
While the writing itself is lovely, the pacing felt slow and the lack of real action made it hard to stay engaged. A well-written book, but unfortunately not one that truly captivated me.
