On her return to Afghanistan, football gave her and her teammates power, comradeship and freedom. But advocating for women's rights in sport put Popal's life increasingly at risk, forcing her to flee the country, this time alone.

As a refugee in Denmark, Popal worked to uncover widespread sexual abuse of players by the former president of the Afghanistan Football Federation - forcing FIFA and the government of Afghanistan to act. When Kabul falls Khalida is safe, but her teammates are left behind. Against all the odds, she and a small but mighty network of allies orchestrate an international evacuation strategy to save them.

After already having read the book, and that having a great impact, having it read to me was an experience on a totally different level. the honesty, bravery and emotion in which Khalida lets us into her life was really eye opening for me and gave me a much deeper, for want of a better word, understanding (though I'll never be able to fully understand) of what it feels like being born into a society which treats females so differently than what I'm used to. it made me more grateful for the privileges I've always had and reminded me to try to always be kind and understanding with everybody and try to understand their behaviour regarding their different backgrounds, especially in my work at a hospital with patients from many different countries.
also the choice of speaker was a really good one with a slight accent and transporting just the right amount of emotion in her voice to feel the words but being able to pull yourself together after allowing just a few teardrops being shed.
I highly recommend this book to everybody, really.
