Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle.
The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror.
Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air - and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untravelled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.
In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini's blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time...or to joyfully return.

Entertaining, but... sloppy?
Christopher Paolini has produced a comprehensive insight into the character Murtagh here. The story arc overall makes sense for the most part, but comes across as a bit overindulgent at times. Functional, nonetheless. However, two main problems kept my enjoyment down consistently. 1. Contrivance. There are multiple points in this story, where Murtagh, or another character, do something that makes no sense within their respective character motivations and/or experience, to get the plot to a certain point. Example (kept it vague, but still, spoiler warning!): An experienced and cautious character entering an unknown cave without backup, in order to get him captured and move the plot along. 2. Inconsistency. At multiple instances throughout the plot, previously established rules and facts of Paolinis world are nonchalantly changed or outright ignored, in order to serve particular plot points or circumvent a plot hole. Example: In book 2 inheritance, Murtagh claims Galbatorix has taught him more magic/words in the ancient language than Eragon knows, deep & dark secrets. Also, Murtagh was always treated as an equal of Eragon in terms of spellcasting. But suddenly, he's supposed to be severely lacking and Galbatorix didn't teach him much? Another example, dragon size. To me it appeared that, throughout the book, Thorn seems to always be the size the plot needs him to be, rather than any clearly defined dimension. In book 4 inheritance, we learn that Thorn is big enough to carry a small regiment of soldiers with him, and is at least half the length of a cathedral. In this book, he can enter through a window? And has to exert himself to carry a couple of supplies? None of this is a deal-breaker on its own. But stacked together, I had the impression that this book was written down relatively fast and without much effort to integrate it properly into the established lore. The result is, in my opinion, a rather mediocre book and a missed opportunity.
