Thrilling and compelling, with a stunning twist, this is written as if Conan Doyle were at Horowitz's shoulder, and is - in my view - the finest crime novel of the year.

An unpredictable and twist-filled mystery from start to finish. But what do you expect from the man penning the next James Bond novel?
I hope it won't be the last of Horowitz' Holmes novels: should he publish another, I will be at the front of the queue.
Though Horowitz dishes up the gore and violence with relish, he also offers all the tropes one might expect from a Holmes yarn, including baffling coded messages, impossible murders and clever red herrings... plotting is just as brilliantly gnarly [as THE HOUSE OF SILK] but its tone more self-aware and laced with in-jokes.
"His new novel, Moriarty, begins with a bravura dissection of Doyle's story "The Final Problem" in which he points out all the discrepancies, loose ends and improbabilities of behaviour. THE HOUSE OF SILK, was very popular and a solid piece of work - well constructed, skilfully executed and persuasively tinged with that alluring sooty flavour of 1890s London. His second, MORIARTY, is much the same, but bolder in its ambitions
"The plot is gripping and the writing most readable. In fact I must make a confession: I would rather read Horowitz than his model, Arthur Conan Doyle."
A no-nonsense writer Horowitz proceeds briskly and ladles out spills and thrills with aplomb. Yet, the novel is terribly serious too - the author evokes a sombre atmosphere early on and thereafter cannot seem to shake it. This is a worthy addition to the store of Holmes fan-fic - but not be quite the romp you expected.

I really enjoyed to listen to this book. Great story and nicely read. A Sherlock Holm story without homes, brilliant.

Great audio book

Although I enjoyed the beginning of the main story, the ending irritated me quite a lot. As someone who grew up reading and appreciating Doyle's stories, I thought Horowitz having been given the Doyle estate's seal of approval would mean that this book might have the flair of the originals. Unfortunately this was only the case with the short story read by Sir Derek Jacobi.

It had already irked me that "The House of Silk" saw a much more "gritty" approach to the Holmesian universe but during the course of this book I was so often reminded of modern TV police dramas where the whole vibe is much darker and depressing. If Moriarty was a TV drama it'd definitely be extremely badly lit and everything had a blue tint. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else.

While I'd not eagerly recommend this book to any fans of the Sherlock Holmes stories, I wouldn't say it is absolutely to be avoided. Julian Rhind-Tutt is as good a narrator as he is an actor. His American accent is solid, though you can definitely hear that it is not natural to him.

All in all an OK book.

Not necessarily a "must listen"

Eine Sherlock Holmes-Geschichte quasi ohne Sherlock Holmes. Ein Fall mit dem Titel MORIARTY, ohne dass der groß darin auftaucht. Stattdessen: ein ehrgeiziger Scotland Yard-Inspector und ein US-Detektiv, die nach dem ‘Reichenbach Fall’ in die großen Fußstapfen des einzigen consulting detective treten. Die scheinen teils einen Hauch zu groß, vermisst man Holmes und Watson doch ein wenig. Allerdings ist der Geist von Arthur Conan Doyle gut eingefangen, mit etwas mehr Brutalität, Stringenz und Action aufgepeppt. Und am Ende zeigt sich, dass Horowitz nicht umsonst von der Conan Doyle Estate auserkoren wurde, das Erbe des Schriftstellers anzutreten: Die Schlusspointe sitzt, dass es eine diebische Freude ist!

Der Sprecher ist Engländer, jongliert amerikanisches und britisches Englisch aber so überzeugend, dass er beides sein könnte! Im zur Ära passenden engagierten Plauderton vorgelesen - starke Leistung!

Sherlock Holmes-Hommage mit Schlusspointe

Als Sir Arthur Conan Doyle eines schönen Tages seinen Helden Sherlock Holmes leid war und ihn loswerden wollte, stieß er ihn mit dem "Napoleon des Verbrechens" Dr. Moriarty über die Klippen der Reichenbachfälle. Diese Geschichte schrieb Conan Doyle ein wenig lieblos und unlogisch, was von zahlreichen Holmesologen längst nachgewiesen wurde, Conan Doyle hatte einfach genug von Holmes, da war ihm die Logik wohl nicht mehr so wichtig. Und genau hier setzt der Roman Moriarty von Horowitz an, bei den vielen unlogischen Elementen der Holmes-Kurzgeschichte: "The final problem". Holmes* Leiche wurde nie gefunden, als Moriarty wird eine aus den Strömungen gezogene Leiche identifiziert, obwohl niemand genau weiß, wie Moriarty eigentlich ausgesehen hat, also ist das Schicksal beider Beteiligten ungewiss.
Da auf Deutsch nur eine stark gekürzte Fassung als Hörbuch angeboten wird, habe ich mich für die englische Originalfassung entschieden - und diese Entscheidung nicht bereut. Das Buch ist einem klaren, gut verständlichen Amerikanisch gesprochen - Amerikanisch deshalb, weil nicht Watson, sondern ein Pinkerton-Detektiv aus den Staaten als Chronist der Ereignisse auftritt. Erzählt wird anfangs vor allem über die große Leere, die Holmes' Verschwinden verursacht, bei Scotland Yard denkt man darüber nach, ob Holmes (vermeintlicher) Tod nicht Anlass sein sollte, endlich wieder selbst das Denken zu lernen und selbst Fälle zu lösen, weil man sich nicht mehr auf den Überflieger Holmes verlassen kann, der alle Ermittlungsfehler von Scotland Yard wieder ausbügelt.
Und ausgerechnet zu diesem Zeitpunkt scheint sich das Verbrechen globalisieren zu wollen, scheinbar hatte Moriarty ein Angebot eines amerikanischen Verbrechersyndikats, gemeinsam eine Weltherrschaft des Verbrechens zu organisieren. Auf den Spuren dieses weltumspannenden Verbrechernetzes finden wir ein ungleiches Paar vor, den schrullig-sympathischen Scotland Yard Inspector Jones, den Holmes zweimal düpiert hatte und der jetzt versucht, die Ermittlungstechniken seines Vorbilds nachzuahmen und selbst anzuwenden - Jones' Arbeitszimmer trägt die Züge eines Holmes-Schreins - und den schon erwähnten Senior Agent Chase aus den Staaten, der die Ausweitung des amerikanischen Verbrechenskartells auf die britischen Inseln verhindern möchte. Grausame Morde werden begangen, und das Ermittlerduo ist den Mördern immer einen Schritt hinterher oder voraus, ganz wie man will. Die Lösung dieses typisch britischen Identitätsspiels soll natürlich nicht verraten werden, nur der kleine Hinweis: Für eine ähnliche Lösung wurde Agatha Christie einst aus dem britischen Verband der Krimiautoren rausgeworfen, eine Scharade der Identitäten... Ein hörenswertes Hörbuch für Holmes-Fans und nicht nur, selbst wenn Holmes scheinbar nur in Gesprächen, Erinnerungen und durch seine Nachahmer präsent ist. Ob er am Ende ins Geschehen eingreift und die aus den Fugen geratene Welt wieder ins Lot bringt, soll und darf ja nicht verraten werden.

Ein erlesener Sherlock Holmes ohne Sherlock Holmes
