This audiobook includes an exclusive Q&A with the author

Mei loses her Japanese mother at age six. Growing up in suburban Surrey, she yearns to fit in, suppressing not only her heritage but her growing desire for her best friend Fran.

Yuki leaves the Japanese countryside to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist in London. Far from home and in an unfamiliar city, she finds herself caught up in the charms of her older teacher.

Haruka attempts to navigate Tokyo's nightlife and all of its many vices, working as a hostess in the city's sex district. She grieves a mother who hid so many secrets from her, until finally one of those secrets comes to light . . .

Shifting between three intertwining narratives, Mongrel reveals a tangled web of desire, isolation, belonging and ultimately, hope.©2024 Hanako Footman (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

Almost perfect but it failed me in the last few minutes

Had its lengths and weak points in the plot, but very solid story overall. Beautifully written. Very interesting considerations and perspectives on certain things. I think many women needed to have a book just like this and it is gonna speak to many.

The last quarter or so is my main problem with the book (very slightly spoilery territory up ahead): there is a lot of build up to the revelations of that part, but after the meeting of the main characters, we only see the immediate impact it has on them. The ending feels very sudden and it would have been interesting to read about how the impulses and what they learned during that time would have influenced their actions. We see a small preview glimpse of that, but no actual longer term development (only two weeks or so in the future). In my opinion, the most wisdom and what the story wanted to teach you is actually hidden behind that. Footman had more to say about this but instead of making a firm statement she left the ending open (albeit with a powerful ending statement). Imo, this weakened the book. She was thiiiiis close to actually making it perfectly round and wrapping it up with a golden bow but she lost momentum at the end.

The narration made it a little hard to listen to it for long. Footman has a beautiful and very pleasing voice. You could tell she was speaking from her heart many times and the narration was very emotional. However, for some reason she read the whole book with the intonation of a poem, ending *every* sentence on a high note. It gave the reading a dream like quality and I suspect it was a deliberate choice by the director. That might sound like a good thing but after a while, the magic of this narrative style fades. For some situations and passages it would have been very fitting, but because everything is read this way, it becomes exhausting to listen to. It makes it feel like it's trying too hard to be tragic, or meaningful, and there is a certain theatrical feeling to it that was very unfitting. It's like when a speaker has a tick of smacking their lips together after every sentence and once you notice it, it can't be unheard. I can see what they were going for, but they went too far.
