Über diesen Titel
Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year.
Jayne Frost is a lot of things. Winter elf, Jack Frost's daughter, Santa Claus's niece, heir to the Winter Throne, and now private investigator. Sort of.
Needing someone he can trust, her father sends her undercover to Nocturne Falls to find out why employees at the Santa's Workshop toy store are going missing.
Doing that requires getting to know the town, which leads to interesting encounters with a sexy vampire, an old flame, and an elevator that's strictly off-limits. The more Jayne finds out, the more questions she has, but the answers lead her deeper into danger.
Will her magic save her? Or will she come up cold?

Unaware Problematic
I have to preface that I thought the concept of the setting was promising and I wasn't previously aware of the authors world and other books, which micht have brought other readers in. I just got it for free and thought it sounded neat. Urban fantasy and Magic are right up my allyway.
Positives:
+ Good editing. The mystery was set up and steadily investigated, the pqcing held the tension.
+The world building was nice. That's allthere is to say, really, though some parts were a bit... unnecessatily mystified and some magical rules not entirely thought out.
Negatives:
- the main character seems flat. Sure you get backstory and it's written in first person, but after reading the entire book I can summatize her in four ways: Loves food, is curious, is ohsomisunderstood and victim of her high status and power is unaware of her own callous nature.
- Consequences aren't very well thought out. 6 employees vanish and no family gets involved/starts search parties? Character gets a cover story with exceptional magical abilities to cover for her own over the top magical abilities... says she learned her cover by heart... and lies the first night to another supernatural in town about her magical abilities. Revolutionairy magical device gets found out and consequences of this horrible discovery and the ripples in the community get ignored because of the
- problematic relationship situations. She is undercover in a town. Not the best position to start a relationship. So she starts 2, simultaneously. One with her ex under false pretense and justifies it with need for her investigations. Even as she seduces him to steal his stuff. The other one gets similarly used, very awkwardly promising sex for answers, alternating, so none know of the other. She's also completely free of guilt about that and as a reader you get told that all of this is fine. The side characters tell her this is fine, her love interest laugh it off, she herself only has passing thoughts about the problematic way of using these men.
- descriptions... I can't imagine 'bright black eyes', can you? There were other ones like that, but that is the only one coming to mind.
- Lack of empathy. Explanation:
++++SPOILER++++
This is one thing that bothered me more than everything else: After finding out the horrible fate of the disappeared elves her worries are about... her love interest(s). And her future. Just like her father's. Who, by the way, freely provided her with all kinds of personal data as support, but didn't think it would have made sense to send her someone else as backup going there, especially since the shop at that time was already double understaffed. Device that siphones the supernatural out of elves and leaves them amnesiac humans. Forever. Not even the king of frost considers the finding of such a device and the idea of what that kind of idea might mean for the future of elvenkind any sort of thoughtworthy. Good thing he was considered a business genius at the beginning..
The book left me seething with pity and disbelief, even though, props: I did chew through it pretty fast.

Chilllasious! ❄️
This book appeared in my recommendations yesterday and it was a delight!
This book adapts the wellknown stories about Jack Frost, winter elves, Santa and the Christmas Magic so well. The author has formed a wonderful word out of these building blocks and Nocturne Falls is a little city pretty busy with supernatural people like werewolves, fey and vampires.
The main character, Jane Frost, is a cool young woman and easy to like. And I'm born in january, a winter child who loves her snowy appearance and humor. So she instantly had my heart.
The narrator is very good and easy to listen. So I'm now moving on the the next adventure of Jane Frost.
