Review on 'Men of Smithfield - Mark and Tony`
The 'Men of Smithfield' stories are on my regular re-listening list whenever I want an entertaining audio book with a great voice actor to make me smile and feel good.
When Mark runs into his boyfriend screwing their landlord, he goes ballistic. It might feel a bit childish to smack your cheating ex with a bible over the head in the middle of a church ceremony and throw his stuff onto the frozen town's dumpster, but honestly, I admire Mark for venting his anger and disappointment like that. He does what, pretty sure each of us had secretly wished for but never dared to do. Mark's best forever friend Tony, now the local police officer, steps in and is finally brave enough to do even more, because Mark is way more than just an upset friend to him. But the romance has to wait a bit longer, as Mark discovers his ex also has emptied out his bank accounts. Suddenly the whole situation further spinns out of control.
L.B.Gregg's story is simply great listening material. It has unique MC s in that imaginary small town setting,fresh dialoges and a good mix of funny,mystery and hot scenes. Mark seems clueless and a bit naive, while intimidating,growling Tony, despite his job, is insecure and a coward when it comes to persue his emotions. Hard to imagine both having had a silent crush for each other over 10 years. I don't mind that the plot has a few flaws and some situations come across like overexaggereated cartoon scenes. Her fluent writing style and the authentic dialoges portay the MC's so vividly that you can imagine them and all the action easily.
Shannon Gunn has done an absolutely great narrating job with this story. You can almost picture him grinning with mischief when interpretating Mark's impulsive behaviour. And the exasperation of Tony with his deeper, growlier voice is also perfectly done. No matter how often I am listening to this audio book, it is always so much fun and leaves me grinning like a loone. Way too soon the end of the story is in reach and I switch to the next book of this entertaining series, just to be able to listen to Shannon Gunn's voice again.
