Über diesen Titel
The final volume in New York Times best-selling author Raymond E. Feist’s epic heroic fantasy series, The Firemane Saga.
War has swept across Marquensas. Ruthless raiders have massacred the inhabitants of Beran's Hill, including Gwen, the beloved wife of Declan Smith. Hollow of heart, his hopes burned to ashes, Declan swears to track down and destroy the raiders, an ambition shared by Baron Daylon Dumarch, whose family was massacred as they fled the capital.
Meanwhile Hava, whose gift for piracy has seen her acquire the treasure ship Borzon's Black Wake and the swift Azhante sailing vessel, Queen of Storms, and won her the name of 'the Sea Demon', is closing in on the whereabouts of those who unleashed the murderous hordes.
Her husband, Hatushaly, the last remaining member of the ruling family of Ithrace, the legendary Firemanes, seeks to control the magical powers he has inherited. He is able now to visualise and even travel among the filaments of energies that power all existence: the furies. But will he be able to channel his magic in time to combat the deepest, darkest threat the world of Garn has ever faced?

Enjoyed it from the beginning until the end
I just love the style! Also, the story certainly captured me just like all of the Midkemia stories and spin offs. In between I thought: how can this come together in the short time left to listen?, but it simply did. It’s definitely a story I will listen to again and hope for more.

No love left for a story
The performance of the narrator got a little more annoying with each of the books. Artificially high pitched voice does nothing (for me) to illustrate surprise or any other emotion.
Although a crisp ending isn't the worst thing... This story line culminates in a "well, it's over" kind of feeling - as if the author just wanted to get it over with.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Feist fan... This short story like ending is just so atypical for this master of epic story lines...
Overall, the series is worth it. Could have spent a few more pages on the last book.

Unbalanced narrative priorities, thin story
This review contains spoilers, beware!
I have read or listened to every novel by Raymond E. Feist and he remains my favourite author, even though he wrote the Firemane Saga. This saga lacks the epic depth of the Midkemia, Kelewan or Demonwar sagas. I therefore constructively addressed the questions as to why this could be.
When reading/listening book 3 of this series you notice that not much has happened so far at any point and there is little progression. Some plot elements are touched on but have no real impact on the story, so after listening I'm now wrestling with the questions concerning this saga:
- Why introduce Ludovico and get nothing out of it?
- Why spend story time on Bernardo at all? For even further framing of the church of the One, which is only being relevant for some additional world building?
- Why introduce the Sisters of the Deep and get next to nothing out of it? Ending with only a forshadowing for some additional power to be gained by Hatushaly after 3 books is lazy.
- Why not introduce a climax to the attack on the Azhante? After a 3-part build up, it was extremely anti-climatic. A wooden gate to burn down is simply not enough as a final challenge for a 3-part novel. I would like to stress this point.
- Why introduce Nathan and stay at this information status and not tell a real story about it? There would have been 3 novels of time for it.
- Why not create a more sociologically believable motivation for the Azhante? Does this Azhante society really come from the pen that described the Tsuranuanni Empire? It felts like the author himself has put little time and love into this sage here. The quality of the description of nautical details also differs strikingly from the author's previous works...
I don't know who helped the author work out the story treatment, but he has been helped more proficiently in the past. The character Donte is a nice example of how narrative time can be wasted without having any impact on a story at all.
Overall, the 3 books are borderline stretched, there are too few twists and everything is relatively linear and predictable - if you have low expectations on how to narratively exploit story events. In summary, it's a three-part build-up that boils down to a reveal in the final pages of the final book. This massively devalues these books as independent works.
If I hadn't read the authors previous books and wasn't familiar with the names of the magicians presented in the very end, the ending would have been completely unsatisfactory. So at least I can understand what this whole build up was aimed at and I'm just disappointed by it.
To tell so little in 3 books and then "conclude" it like that seems almost impertinent to me.
I would welcome a clean conclusion to the story. Unlike Declan, Hatushaly has had almost no relevance as a central character in the story in these three books at least.
The speaker does a good job and I would like to hear him again, although the voice breaks a bit unpleasantly sometimes.

Master of Furies
A very Enjoyable story by E Feist.
Audio Quality is quit poor though, that took a lot of joy out of the experience.
