Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before

The audiobook of Lords and Ladies is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'People didn't seem to be able to remember what it was like with the elves around. Life was certainly more interesting then, but usually because it was shorter. And it was more colourful, if you liked the colour of blood . . .'

On Midsummer Night, dreams are especially powerful. So powerful, in fact, that they can cause the walls between realities to come crashing down. And some things you really don't want to break through.

The witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick return home to discover that elves have invaded Lancre. And even in a world of wizards, trolls, dwarfs, Morris dancers - and the odd orangutan - they're spectacularly nasty creatures.

The fairies are back - and this time they don't just want your teeth...

'His spectacular inventiveness makes the Discworld series one of the perennial joys of modern fiction' Mail on Sunday

'Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy'
The Sunday Times

Lords and Ladies is the fourth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Classic Discworld story, fun, warm and light-hearted. The witches are always a favourite of mine so this was a delight. The narrator is absolutely brilliant, giving each character a unique voice. I'll definitely be checking everything else she's done!

As fun as you can expect!

I didn't expect this newly adapted Version of Sir Terry Pratchett's work to be this good. I owned an older one and loved it literaly to shreds, the CD simply wouldn't run anymore. Now I came across this one and it is really good. They Narrator Indira Varma is bringing the Story to Life and the small interjections by another Narrator, Bill Nighy, who reads out Footnotes, make this experience well rounded for me.

Something different.

The series keeps on getting better and better even though it seems impossible. Can truly reccomend.

Hilariously charming

I eagerly awaited the new edition of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. As a big fan of the Witches, Vimes and other works that were first released as audiobooks decades ago, I had of course gotten used to the not-so-great audio quality, but at least to the voices of Nigel Planer and Stephen Briggs. After all, each narrator adds an individual touch to the characters.

The story is fun and inspiring like all the other Discworld novels. There are witty characters (lovingly drawn and authentic), wry dialogue, philosophical excursions, deep wisdom, funny settings, and various plot lines coupled with lots of imagination that weave together to create a wonderful masterpiece.

Indira Varma's language is easy to understand and probably super suitable for beginners in English. Granny Weatherwax, whom I "adore" very much, was given an additional nuance by Indira. She added depth, urgency and presence to the character. I also experienced Magret Garlick in a completely new way and as a thoroughly interesting character. I especially liked Giamo Cazanunda - simply brilliant!
And the Morris men in their escape from the elves were also a masterstroke!

In the remake, I would have continued to give Death a reverb; he's not as convincing in the remake.

What I didn't like at all, however, are the footnotes introduced and exited by means of strange sound effects. It interferes immensely with the listening pleasure that I almost dreaded every footnote - especially the short ones.. I wonder how anyone can come up with such an idea. Also, Bill Nighy sounds kind of muzzy compared to Indira Varma.

And at the end of the audiobook, a pompous orchestral music track comes out of nowhere completely unexpectedly, which - after you've enjoyed the conclusion of the audiobook and are still mentally walking in the Discworld - knocks your eardrums out. What's the point of that? So quickly switch off after last sentence.

Should there be a second edition, I would include Bill Nighy's footnotes without sound effect directly into the text, since they have a connection with the text anyway.

Great narrator - wyrd Footnotes

I do love the whole series. Every joke and wordplay from Pratchett is well interpreted and pointed.

Great version!
