Über diesen Titel

The first major biography of the logician and mathematician whose incompleteness theorems helped launch a modern scientific revolution.

Nearly a hundred years after its publication, Kurt Gödel's famous proof that every mathematical system must contain propositions that are true - yet never provable - continues to unsettle mathematics, philosophy, and computer science. Yet unlike Einstein, with whom he formed a warm and abiding friendship, Gödel has long escaped all but the most casual scrutiny of his life.

An intimate portrait of the scientific and intellectual circles in prewar Vienna and a vivid re-creation of the early days of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, Journey to the Edge of Reason is the first biography to fully draw upon Gödel's voluminous letters and writings - including a never-before-transcribed shorthand diary of his most intimate thoughts - to explore his profound intellectual friendships, his moving relationship with his mother, his troubled yet devoted marriage, and the debilitating bouts of paranoia that ultimately took his life. It illuminates the mind-bending implications of Gödel's revolutionary ideas for philosophy, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and man's place in the cosmos.

All in all a very good Gödel Biography. In the first 3h it starts a little slow in terms of Gödel himself but speaks very much about the societal environment he and his family lived under which is interesting in itself. The book does not only present a biography of Gödel, his genius, his nativity, his quirks and his illness, but also gives interesting accounts on other big thinkers he was friends or acquainted with. I also feel the account of his wife Adele is more nuanced here compared to what I read seems to be the case in other texts about Gödel. The only thing I think that must be clear is that a deep understanding of his mathematical thinking via audio is difficult, but one gets some ideas. I liked it.

Very interesting Gödel Biography

The book itself is perfectly interesting and well written. My only criticism is that some translations from German are dubious and the pronounciation of German terms is genuinely atrocious. Aside from such pedantries: Good read!

Good book that would have benefited from German lessons

Not only an excellent biography but a very thorough and informative history of the rise and demise of the Austrian “Empire”

Very informative

A well-written biography about a most exceptional and interesting man! The only thing I found a bit lacking was a more thorough discussion of Gödel's actual theories and their implications.

Excellent
