Über diesen Titel
It turns out, the "Demon Weed" actually is a gateway drug! Who knew? Tom Perkinje certainly didn't. He had never smoked anything in his life, but as the new kid in town trying to make friends, he foolishly let his new buddy Reggie talk him into trying a joint that he'd picked up from a new dealer.
Before he knew it, Tom was having a seriously bad trip; a total out-of-body experience where the world had dissolved around him. The next thing Tom knew, there were these deranged myopic wizards from some place called Astlan calling on him in some sort of pig Latin mumbo jumbo. They had somehow mistaken Tom for a demon!
He tried to flee, but the wizards were relentless and were determined to conjure him into their world and bind him as their demon slave for all of eternity. And these crazy wizards? Turns out, they were going to war and planned to use their new demon slave as a secret weapon to obliterate the enemy!

Good one!
Sehr gut geschrieben und spannende Charakterentwicklung. Etwas nervig finde ich einen der Nebenfiguren. Freue mich dennoch auf den nächsten Teil.

way too much redundancy
This review is not just about "Into the Abyss" but also about the two next books in the "Demons of Astlan Series" ("The Heavenly Host", "The Apostles of Doom"). I was able to access the books for free.
On the plus side I really like the setup (the protagonist is forced to serve as a demon in some fantasy world), and one major theme of the books is the 'rehabilitation' of demons, orcs etc., which -- it turns out -- are just victims of discrimination by so-called forces of good. The tone of the book is humorous, which fits the setup well. Unfortunately, some of it was too purile for me, but that's obviously a matter of taste. Stephen Bel Davies does a great job narrating the books.
The biggest negative is the redundant writing. Firstly, the author seems to think that his readers don't pay any attention. Repeatedly, there is a 'what happened so far'-moment, where a character summarizes what happened previously. Secondly, we do not just get a description of events, but a lot of commentary and reactions. E.g., at the end of "Into the Abyss" happens a fight, which is captured on a magical analog of a video recording. A significant chunk of "The Heavenly Host" consists of detailed descriptions of at least four different groups of people watching this video and providing commentary and speculations. Thirdly, the are certain ideas or questions that are contemplated by the protagonists again and again and again, often using very similar language.
Starting with book 2 the series shares an issue with many sequels in the fantasy genre: the main protagonist has become too powerful and, thus, the author is forced to turn it up to eleven -- stretching the suspension of disbelieve beyond its limits. The fact that various characters explicitly ask "How can a 16 year old from New Jersey do X" (where X is something that has been beyond their wildest imagination) and are answered "I don't know", does not help.
In my opinion there are some good ideas in the book series, but it would have benefitted from a stricter editing process. The first book in the series was the most enjoyable of the three books I read. I would have felt unhappy if I had paid money for books two and three.
