Über diesen Titel

Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light.

Intellectuals have played a major role in racial issues throughout the centuries. Though their individual views may differ, as a whole their views tend to group, and just over the course of the twentieth century, they have shifted from one end of the spectrum to the other. Surprisingly, these radically different views of race were held by intellectuals whose views on other issues were often very similar.

Intellectuals and Race is not, however, a book about history, even though it has much historical evidence, as well as demographic, geographic, and economic evidence - all of it directed toward testing the underlying assumptions about race that have prevailed at times among intellectuals in general, and especially at their highest levels.

Nor is this simply a theoretical exercise. Sowell’s ultimate concern is the impact of intellectual movements on the larger society, both past and present. These ideas and crusades have ranged widely from racial theories of intelligence to eugenics to “social justice” and multiculturalism.

In addition to in-depth examinations of these and other issues, Intellectuals and Race explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Kritikerstimmen

"Sowell brings an all-too-rare perspective to whatever he writes about - that of a conservative black intellectual, especially valuable for this book’s topic." ( Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

An evenhanded and clear exposition

I find Thomas Sowells books worthwhile reading.
In this book he engages with the topic of race and intellectuals. Once again he warns against the lack of accountability, that is so characteristic for intellectuals. In this book it doesn’t matter if it’s the genetic based policies of the early 20. century, with eugenics, sterilization and segregation as consequences or the social or cosmic justice warriors, who makes their living advocating for affirmative action and blaming society for the lacking results of minority groups in USA.
Facts or ideas from Sowell, that I’ll try to remember, are the examples of changing IQ of different immigrant groups in the US; the success of minority groups like the Chinese in Malaysia, the Lebanese in West Africa but also Jews and Asian people in the US; the insistence that Slavery has been ubiquitous in the world, and that you could argue, that in fact it was the Western world, some white men, who were the first to turn against it; he has arguments against minimum wages and the well fare state as undermining blacks, because they are responsible for keeping black youth out of the working market, and young black mothers preferring to be ‘married’ with the state, as the man can’t provide. I’ve heard this argument repeated often from American conservatives, but I’m not sure if it’s true. Being a father my self, I would like to believe, that my presence makes a positive difference, but living in Denmark I know that many children end up with divorced parents. But maybe it’s another thing in the US, where the absent father is radically absent? In Denmark, I believe the majority of divorcees do try to share the time with the children in an equitable way.

Disapells common notions and is very relevant.

It's amazing how this book came out about 10 years ago yet nailed exactly what is going on in our society.
