Über diesen Titel

From Brexit Britain to Trump's America to Orban's Hungary, liberal values are under attack.

In a soaring narrative that stretches from the English Civil War to the 2008 financial crash and the rise of populism, the journalist Ian Dunt tells the epic story of liberalism, from its birth in the fight against absolute monarchy to the modern-day resistance against the new populism.

This book explains the political ideas which underpin the modern world. But it is also something much more than that - it is a rallying cry for those who still believe in freedom and reason.

Ian Dunt gives a wonderful run through history from Descartes to Donald Trump, showing the successes and failures of liberal thought. For me this book has been the key that was missing to explaining where we are now, how we got here and what we can do about it. Will definitely buy the book as well.

Dunt is an experienced journalist and has put together a series of readable potted histories of some of the important events and people of the last few hundred years. Readable, but not particularly trustworthy or insightful - certainly not as insightful as he thinks they are.

If you are already a 'leftwing liberal' then you'll most probably enjoy this book very much and you will very likely even learn a thing or three - just be sure to, at the very least, check Wikipedia before you start quoting too many of Dunt's historical details around the dinner table.

For the rest of us - 'rightwing liberals', marxists, adherents of identity politics, nationalists, etc, etc - there is very little here worth engaging with.

Courageous, if you're James O'Brien, I guess
