I have read it too
It almost seems as if a large part of the 24 lectures consist of name-dropping: books and authors who get mentioned as examples for the point Prof. Wolfe wants to make. And the avid sci-fi reader who listens nods knowingly: yes, I have read it too.
Periods and topics (he calls them “icons”) like spaceships or robots are discussed in great detail and almost at nauseam with lots of references to key novels. Sometimes it seems as if a spoiler alert should be included at the beginning of each lecture. But then also a lot of books get introduced in a way that makes me eager to read some of them or happy not to have read them.
Nevertheless it is very interesting to listen to the various POVs on this literary genre, learning a lot about the background of authors and sub-genres one does not appreciate so much but are important parts of the big picture.
Unfortunately Prof. Wolfe despite being very knowledgeable about his subject has a rather dry lecturing style. So while there is emotion – he feels deeply about SciFi and hates bad movies - a bit of humour is lacking. But then this is no fun performance since there are also the materials to this lecture series included (as pdf-file).
I would recommend this lecture programme to fans of the genre or people who have already read quite a bit of SciFi. For those not familiar with the genre looking for an introduction it would be overkill by an alien with ray-guns…

Sehr interessant, aber eher "The History, Presents and Future of SF" als "How great SF works"
Ich hab mir diesen sehr umfangreichen Vortrag geholt, weil ich dachte hier geht es eher um das Ploting und das konkrete Arbeiten an einer eigenen Geschichte. Dem ist nicht so, trotzdem kann ich dieses Hörbuch wärmstens empfehlen, da es einen sehr ausführlichen und fundierten Einblick in die verschiedensten Entwicklungen und Formen der SF Literatur gibt. Eine tolle Tour durch ein faszinierendes Genre! Dazu gibts auch noch ein 120 seitiges PDF, zum nachlesen und wieder in Erinnerung rufen. Von mir eine klare Empfehlung.
