Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered, and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby priory.
When former local girl Dr. Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface, making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.
Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set on the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne, cut off from the English mainland by a tidal causeway.

Fully recommendable
Good story that pulls you in and also on to the next book. Jonathan Keeble is a pleasure to listen to with his excellent way of creating different voices for different characters.
If you like a good detective story you will love this one.

Far fetched and unrealistic
Nice setting, but far fetched and in places totally unrealistic, which I found exasperating. Disappointing.

Leider langweilig
Der Funke springt nicht über - die Charaktere sind eindimensional und vorhersehbar. Es war so langweilig, dass ich etliche Kapitel übersprungen habe und mich weder mit der Story noch mit den Hauptprotagonisten anfreunden konnte. Schade, vor allem weil ich immer glücklich bin, wenn ich eine Serie von mehreren Büchern finde - aber da war schon eines mehr als genug.

Not for me
I have read a lot of stories of this genre, but this was one of the worst books so far, boring and predictable with lots of cliche. I do not recommend it.

Brutal ritual killings with an island full of drugged crazy people
On Holy Island a young female is killed and offered to the gods. Whilst the police are investigating more people get killed and the detective DCI Ryan who had been on a sabbatical after the showdown with another brutal killer has to step it up a notch whilst he is falling hard in love and worrying that she might be next.
Without this lovely story about the detectives and their blooming loves, I would have put the book as their were more devil worshippers and brutal killers on a tiny island than one could ever imagine and even then it wasn’t over.
Not only too brutal, unlogical, but also it was very hard to follow which character on the island was up to what and however involved and therefore confusing.
I was disappointed.
