Über diesen Titel
Bloomsbury presents Extinction by Douglas Preston, read by David Aaron Baker.
An epic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston, perfect for fans of Michael Crichton. Extinction explores the very real effort to resurrect the woolly mammoth and other extinct megafauna from the Pleistocene Age.
Erebus Resort, occupying a magnificent hundred-thousand acre valley deep in the Colorado Rockies, offers guests the experience of viewing woolly mammoths, Irish Elk, and giant ground sloths in their native habitat, brought back from extinction through the magic of genetic manipulation.
When a billionaire's son and his new wife are kidnapped and murdered in the Erebus back country by what is assumed to be a gang of eco-terrorists, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Agent Frances Cash partners with county sheriff James Colcord to track down the perpetrators.
As killings mount and the valley is evacuated, Cash and Colcord must confront an ancient, intelligent, and malevolent presence at Erebus, bent not on resurrection... but extinction.
Kritikerstimmen
'A creepy and creative variation on Jurassic Park... as smart and spine-chilling as the best of Michael Crichton.' Publishers Weekly
A thriller as breathlessly riveting as you would expect from a genre master like Douglas Preston, but much more too: it's meaty and thought-provoking, and tells us a lot about our distant past – and our immediate future. Spectacular!' Lee Child
'One of the most heart-stopping, terrifying climaxes of any novel I've read in recent years. Preston ingeniously combines real-life science and technology into his novels, and Extinction brings it all together in a thriller that's truly thrilling!' Tess Gerritsen
'Preston is a master storyteller. I’m still thinking about Extinction which is both entertaining and frightening, every page like a tasty treat. You have to read this!' Steve Berry

This is NOT Jurassic Park!
At the very beginning of the book the CEO of Erebus is adamant that this is NOT Jurassic Park. Boy was he spot on. At that point in the book I was still genuinely excited to hear this would not be just another Michael Crichton clone. Having fought my way to the end of this train-wreck, I admit I wish it had been.
This is a very mediocre thriller with the barest hint of a Jurassic Park wanna-be setting. Someone we don’t care about gets murdered in a park where animals we learn nothing about are being de-extinct by a unscrupulous organisation whose motivations are unclear, compounded by a farcically incompetent FBI facsimile, and it’s up to two very shallow heroes to save the day. About 100 pages from the comes the shocking plot-twist which adds (spoiler alert) another extremely crudely sketched party to the mix. And it all ends on “to be continued”.
…there. Erebus in a nutshell. Why is this so disappointing? The author is one half of the marriage that gave us Agent Pendergast, whose books for the most part are AAA. Also, Preston has the chops and knowledge to actually make us learn and care about the setting of Erebus and the party-whose-name-shall-not-be-said. Instead it’s all just meh. I always waited for the story to take off, and then it was done. The potential of the premise was totally wasted. This book - to me - seems like a cash-in. Preston had a great idea for an intriguing setting, sketched it out in its barest format, bolted on a generic “whodunit” and presto…
I wanted to walk away from this loving and knowing as much about mammoths and their era as I did when I read JP. I wanted to immerse myself in their world, hanging on to a fascinating adventure intertwining with that ecosystem. But all you get, is an uneasy ride-share with the interesting party stuffed in the trunk.
On the plus side; great narrator. I’d have him read a phonebook to me. Not his fault what he had to work with.
Yeah, this is definitely NOT Jurassic Park.
