Martha belonged to a secret organization called LERN. In the words of the NOV, she was a love-lover. Having the semi-freedom to love her son Jan was a blessing. Unfortunately, the bond created would make the Love-Deprogramming school all that much more difficult. Failing the program meant imprisonment and permanent separation of mother and child. Either way, the torture methods were perfected to break even the strongest love-lover.

All the members of LERN looked forward to the day when they could escape and create their own colony. No one really knew if and when that time would come. Even if the NOV hunters didn't catch them and execute them on the spot, then they'd surely die in the wilderness. Wild animals, lack of food, no clean water, and no medications to relieve effects of the plagues. Given these harsh conditions, even the strongest colony would implode, love-lovers or not.
