Inhaltsangabe

Detective Kurt O'Donnell is used to digging up other people's secrets, but when he discovers his slain partner was married to another man, it shakes him. Determined to do the right thing, Kurt offers the mourning Davy his assistance. Helping Davy through his grief helps Kurt deal with the guilt that his partner didn't trust him enough to tell him the truth, and somewhere along the way Davy stops being an obligation and becomes a friend, the closest friend Kurt has ever had.

His growing attraction to Davy complicates matters, leaving Kurt struggling to reevaluate his sexuality. Then a sensual encounter neither man is ready for confuses them further. To be with Davy, Kurt must face the prospect of coming out, but his job and his relationship with his Catholic family are on the line. Can he risk destroying his life for the uncertain possibility of a relationship with a newly widowed man?

Review on "Cop Out - Toronto Tales 01" by KC Burn

When a stake out goes terribly wrong, his partner on the force dies while Detecitve Kurt O´Donnell is severely injured. Learning about all the secrets Ben kept from him and meeting his griefing widower Davy shakes up Kurt´s world completely afterwards. Even more so when he realizes that his initial support to Davy turns into a close friendship and more. How would his big, rambunctious irish-catholic family react? Gentle, quiet Davy would deserve so much more than being a „dirty secret“ again.

With „Cop Out“ KC Burn has started a gripping series that let us readers turn the pages eagerly. The police part just serves as background framework, the main focus is on the high-speed emotional roller coaster Kurt goes through more than once. Both MC s are wonderfully developed in multiple layers and feel so „alive“ and likeable that my heart went out to both of them instantly. The story is told from Kurt´s POV, so we are kept as much in doubt and worry about Davy´s feelings and thoughts as Kurt himself. I liked the longer timespan they had to make their growing feelings be realistic. Kurt´s new partner Simon brought a breeze of fresh air with him, which I liked a lot. Just the predictable end had felt a bit too much, too sweet for me, although I loved to see Kurt and Davy happy finally.

Tristan James has done an outstanding job with his narration of this emotional story. His portait of stubborn Kurt in the beginning, who has to push his help onto the griefing Davy, was brilliant. As was his interpretation of Kurt feeling betrayed by Ben´s lack of trust. When he meets Davy his protective instincts go into overdrive, and later Kurt´s anger about how Ben treated Davy. The softer voice for sweet, shy and lost in grief Davy was the next perfect fit. Davy sitting in his garden looking at the over ripe tomatoes in despair was read with so much feeling that my own heart ached. The accents for Kurt´s parents hit the nail on its head, too. Mr.James reading with all this emphasis the 7 hours of this Audio Book just flew by!
