Inhaltsangabe
“If you liked Chaos, you’ll love Complexity. Waldrop creates the most exciting intellectual adventure story of the year” (The Washington Post).
In a rarified world of scientific research, a revolution has been brewing. Its activists are not anarchists, but rather Nobel Laureates in physics and economics and pony-tailed graduates, mathematicians, and computer scientists from all over the world. They have formed an iconoclastic think-tank and their radical idea is to create a new science: complexity. They want to know how a primordial soup of simple molecules managed to turn itself into the first living cell--and what the origin of life some four billion years ago can tell us about the process of technological innovation today.
This book is their story--the story of how they have tried to forge what they like to call the science of the 21st century.
“Lucidly shows physicists, biologists, computer scientists and economists swapping metaphors and reveling in the sense that epochal discoveries are just around the corner...[Waldrop] has a special talent for relaying the exhilaration of moments of intellectual insight.” (The New York Times Book Review)
“Where I enjoyed the book was when it dove into the actual question of complexity, talking about complex systems in economics, biology, genetics, computer modeling, and so on. Snippets of rare beauty here and there almost took your breath away.” (Medium)
“[Waldrop] provides a good grounding of what may indeed be the first flowering of a new science.” (Publishers Weekly)

Fascinating and inspiring
I enjoyed the book a lot. It traces the formation of the Santa Fe Institute and its founding members and their academic careers and achievements and in doing that also gives a good general idea of the fascinating interdisciplinary project that emerged through the interaction of the researchers and their theories, experiments and approaches.
When I found out that the book was published in 1992 and probably written in parts in the late 80s and early 90s, I was baffled because I would have dated it one or two decades later. This is because the topic and the discussed ideas and perspectives (complexity and the emergence of order) still feel revolutionary and fresh.
The writing style also does not feel dated. To the contrary M. Mitchel Waldrop is able to explain complicated matters in an understandable yet adequately differentiated way mostly by reference to well curated statements by the protagonists themselves.
And as an audio book the narrator does a great job. Thanks to their craft the text is easy to understand (even for a non native speaker like me) and enjoyable to listen to.

A good story of development of complexity theory
The author explain amazingly and with an very detailed research, the story of the development of the St. Fe Institute for complex systems, explaining also the relevant biography of the main founders.
However, the complex theory is only mentioned partially between the story.
In summ, a good story about the institute but a poor information about complexity theory.

I didn't like it
The way the characters are introduced and talked about made me not care about them at all.
The story was the part I hoped was being skipped soon so that there were finally some ideas being explored.
The science is simultaneously not explained well enough. I didn't get a sense that I now know why many people didn't think "increasing returns" are real, why another guy thinks it was, whether that dispute was settled, and so forth.
