too brutal

Aoife McMahon is brilliant.
The story could habe been brilliant, too, if Graham Masterton wasn't so overwhelmingly brutal. He seems completely unable to characterise his protagonists, something that is essential in literature. Instead, he sticks to the childlike habit of fairy tales: Good people do good things, evil people do evil things. But whereas fairy tales get away with it, a crime story with no layers whatsoever comes across as plump, superficial and gives te impression it was written by somebody who bathes in fantasies of brutality. It reads also very much like a boring police report when nobody has a first name or gets a nickname, anything to give them personality. The author makes a point of adding the title to each and every person in each and every situation. Very exhausting and completely unnecessary.
His detectives seem neither competent nor streetwise. They act without intuition and without sense.
In my book, Masterton can't be taken seriously.
