I felt mostly indifferent towards Pirie in the last book, but actively disliked her in this one, I found her alternately boring and annoying. There's nothing I found even remotely interesting about her, and her "romance" with Hamish the Hunk was cringeworthy. You'd have to suspend a huge amount of disbelief to accept that Hamish falls head over heels for Pirie after talking to her a couple of times. What's the attraction? She doesn't have an interesting personality or a great sense of humour, she's not a particularly kind woman or noticeably charming. By her own admission she's not a looker either. And yet Hamish is so bowled over after knowing her for about five minutes that he hurries off to Tiffany's to buy some diamonds for her?! Yeah, right. Exactly the kind of thing that happens in real life, eh?
The office politics in this series are ridiculous, too: One hostile superior officer disappears only to be replaced by another hostile superior officer?! Give me a break! And what's with those stupid nicknames? Are they supposed to be amusing? Ugh.
The narrator's very good, but even an excellent narrator doesn't stand a chance against a boring plot and annoying characters.
