Great noir 40k story, poor performance by the narrator

The story is interesting, gritty and dark, but down to earth at the same time - a welcome break from all the bolter porn and clashes of millions of soldiers. I found "Flesh and steel" better, but this is a close second for me when it comes to w40k crime stories.

Unfortunately the person narrating this audiobook quite bad, especially when it comes to dialogues. It is hard to keep track of who says what as he barely does any accents and even if he tries it, it's not consistent. There's also no emotions conveyed, so sometimes it's like those old bots for automatic text to speech generation. I feel like this audiobook would gain a lot if it was narrated by someone else.

Great start for Warhammer Crime

Chris Wraight delivers a story that is true to the tropes of the hard-boiled detective genre with a fresh 40k spin.
The worldbuilding is great and the characters feel very real. In fact, it's the first 40k book to examine what married life and work-life balance would be like in the grimdark future.
There is some commentary on state propaganda and the police's relationship with the upper and lower classes, but delivered as diegetic musings it enriches the story and is integral to the plot.
All in all a great read start to finish, 5 out of 5 recommended without reservations.

Great detective novel, hope for more

I really like this story and it’s characters , sure it’s a little cheesy but that’s what I expect and love about these kind of novels, detective fictions works surprisingly well in warhammer. I hope GW doesn’t kill off the series like they did with the plague wars novels, I’d really like a successor.

Expect the unexpected

It shows with beautiful detail the life in one of the hive cities in the dystopian universe of warhammer 40k. You expect space marines but there are mere peasants of the throne!! I loved every second of the story. Highly recommended.

didnt expect Warhammer Crime to be this good

ITS a really interesting Story about the work of profectors, Gangs and criminals in 40K and a great look into juvenat Treatments known throughout 40k AS well AS the über society of planets

i didnt realise what His secret really ment until the Last chapter Sand for anyone still clueless after the book the hint was the unknown scar on His chest

Nice one, but certainly nothing new.

Warhammer Crime in all does not come anywhere close to the Eisenhorn or Ravenor Series. Of the Crime Series I would favor the Wraithbone Phoenix and Flesh and Steel over Bloodlines, but for someone with a subscription who likes all of the above a decent enough Audio Book to pass the time.

Chris tried Morgan

Richard Morgan God-Emporer of CyberPunk Noire, the Master Mind behind Altered Carbon and Mars Overdrive is getting copied into Warhammer 40k Universum by Chris W... however while Morgan relies on Sex, Violence and an extremly deep, rich and detailed world Chris didnt manage to do so. With WH zero sex policy and a lag of references to create an alive and rich scenary there isnt much to fill the pages with. I personally hoped for more, since civil life is rarely covered in WH*0k stories and Chris could have used this freedom for creating something deep and fantastic but he didnt. If you have not read Morgan or Gibson or Clark or Stephenson... try those instead.

A middling crime novel bereft of that warhammer feeling

It’s not a bad novel per se, but due to the restrictions imposed by the source material (noir without any sexual implications - weird, I know), it needs to fill those voids with something else. You’d expect that to be the grim-dark warhammer feeling we’re all here for, but some name dropping aside this story could be set in any generic sci-fi universe. What remains is an okay but somewhat bland crime novel, and ultimately something of a missed opportunity.
