It’s the best fiction i ever had the privilege to listen to. I love the narrator’s voice, his sublime mastery of voicing literal speech, his calm precision. Im highly critical of fiction and dislike 98.5+% of fiction i listen to, so i do non-fiction nigh exclusively - so consider me surprised almost shocked at the indelible mark this masterpiece left on my soul, not that such a thing as a soul truly exists.

I am not Shute how I feel about this book, it needs multiple reads (listenings) to have certain conclusions. The book is not bad at any means but It requires a hard stomach for a couple scenes.

That Judge Holden. He's a real specimen, isn't he? Another review criticized the narrator audibly wetting his lips too often and a) I didn't really notice that often and b) every character constantly spits on the floor and does other disgusting things with their mouths so it's actually immersive.

Wenn man als deutscher amerikanisch sehr gut versteht und McCarthys style kennt wird hier auf ein wahres Meisterwerk stoßen. Der Leser reißt einen mit seiner simplen Art sehr gut mit. Die Performance ist ungeschlagen, jedes Atmen, schlucken, sich die Lippen befeuchten. Einzig artig gut.

This book is highly acclaimed by the literary world and readers, so probably the fact that I absolutely do not like it is squarely on my own subjective tastes and preferences. There is some plot to this Western-style novel obviously, but I simply cannot find any point to it. I imagine there are people who don't need to think about what they read/hear, they'd be probably seeking immersion in the world/landscape created by the author, but I am obviously not one of those. The landscape and narrative of the book is bleak, the plot leads nowhere, the violence is all-encompassing, absolutely pointless and gory and characters are hollow and flat - except perhaps for the Judge, but even he does not make much sense as a whole - learned, philosophical, yet violent and sadistic (e.g., puppies episode) and "just riding ahead". But the main problem I have with this book is that I can't find any central idea in it, nothing to think about, nothing to relate to, nothing my mind can chew on. It has nothing to do with the highly descriptive literary style, Hemingway wrote like this, but there was a point to it. I can't find any here. No clue why this is touted as a Great American Novel.

As for the execution of the audiobook, it's quite good. I very much like the slower and calmer style of the reading actor. I guess if somebody likes this novel, the voice certainly helps to amplify the writing. But then again, as I can't find anything interesting here, I couldn't even finish this, I made it to like 70% and then put aside. Whatever happens in the last hours has no chance to fix what's wrong with this book for me.
