Über diesen Titel
On June 20, 1815, rumors of Wellington's victory in what history would come to call the Battle of Waterloo reach London. Among the townspeople celebrating, first the rumor and then the confirmation of victory, are Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy (and their son, Fitzy) and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bingley, who live a few blocks apart in Mayfair in London. The news became bleak for the families, however, when they soon received a dispatch that Captain George Wickham had been valiantly killed in battle. His pregnant widow, Lydia, and sister-in-law, Kitty (or Catherine), will come to London to be with their families, joined by their parents who come down from Longbourn. The remaining sister, Mary, will remain in northern England near the Scottish border with her husband, a vicar.
This begins Becoming Catherine Bennet. We soon learn, however, two great secrets. One, concerning Darcy and his money, is soon known throughout London, Derbyshire, and wherever a member of London society resides. The other, concerning our heroine, Catherine, will only be revealed to a handful, those who need to know all or part of the truth. These individuals include Elizabeth (though not as yet Jane), and the three who were freed by the death in 1813 of Lady Catherine de Bourgh: Charlotte Collins, William Collins, and Anne de Bourgh.

Becoming Catherine Bennet
In 1815 Wellington wins the Battle of Waterloo. The news soon spreads all over England and everyone is celebrating. But the victory comes at a high price. It leaves Lydia as a pregnant widow and she and her sister Kitty need to return to London. Not long afterwards Elizabeth must face two secrets. The one around her husband's money is soon widely known and the family needs to act. The other secret is Kitty's secret and of some delicacy. Elizabeth and a handful of true friends help her and her sister to keep the matter secret and find a way for Kitty who now calls herself Catherine. Will she nevertheless find her way in life or will the struggles cause her fall?
The author Joseph P. Garland describes in his book Kitty/Catherine Bennet's way from being a silly girl along with Lydia to a young Lady on her own. He describes it all unagitated, I like his style.
Besides Kitty maturing this is also a story about friendship, cohesion among sisters and finding your own way, no matter what the others do. I really liked that Catherine was able to find a way out of difficult situations with the help of her friends, especially her sister Elizabeth and her friend Anne de Bourg, and that in the end she found a way to be a content grown up woman. And I was glad that nearly all secrets were in the end revealed, thus the others were able to comprehend especially Catherine's actions (I often thought during the book that there were too many secrets).
I give 4,5 stars rounded up to five. The only thing that bothered me a little was the change of the narration style in the middle of the book/audiobook, at the beginning it is an all-knowing narrator, the second part is told from Catherine's point of view. I found this a little bit confusing. That might not bother other people but I prefer when there is no change.
The audiobook was narrated by Alice Katherine Sanders. I found her narration very agreeable and liked it very much. She has done a really good job.
If you would like to know Catherine Bennet better, be part of her journey to a grown up woman and learn of the friendship and cohesion she experiences you should definitely listen to this audiobook.
I highly recommend it.
I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
