Inhaltsangabe

Pain. Chaos. Happiness?

Dominic Hart was screwed.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay.

What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online". That might have been because a video game mafia controlled the city. Or maybe it was because even the plant life could kill you. Regardless, his shit luck had obviously tagged along for the ride.

But that's life. The odds are stacked in the house's favor, you're running out of chips, and you have to decide to hit or fold. For Dom, he decided to go all in. What did he really have to lose?

It's just his life and happiness hanging in the balance.

The best entry in the series thus far

Travis Bagwell's storytelling and writing skills have certainly leveled up with Happy. I really enjoy the Awaken Online series, but ever since the first two entries, I've consistently found that each entry has a low point in the middle or a section that really seems to drag on and on a bit too much.

Happy has an excellent pacing, fantastic characters, interesting new uses of the AO mechanics, and overall an enjoyable and thrilling story.

I hope some of these trends will carry over to the next entries as well!

I am NOT Happy at all with this book and narrator

Well, I bought this book because of Travis recommendation to read first this book before moving on with the main AWO story, which is Armageddon.

In a nutshell, the story is about "do not to give up" and move on even, if there seems to be little hope for success.
So far so good, but I do not get how invite deaths show skill and success, beside the "never give up attitude". Especially with the previous described AWO mechanics Travies described in the past.

Well, I get that AWO is an "AI" controlled online world, which has different measurements beside levels and skills, but again, getting killed and then getting rewarded for it is just nonsense. I even take it that "death wish" is reducing the re-spwn time, but normally only to try again and get better and not loosing again. Therefore for me this death-record systems is just nonsense and inconstant with his pervious books.

I also hated monologs of "Bard" and how David Stifel has read Bard and some other female characters. His voice is just "too old" for these characters. His voice was perfectly fitting for Finn, but I did not like it for the chars in this book.

Just my 2-cents. I am NOT "Happy" and very disappointed, I dod not enjoy this book as I had enjoyed the others.
