 A beautiful June day in the Yorkshire Dales, and a group of children are spending the last of their half-term freedom swimming in the river near Hindswell Woods. But the idyll is shattered by their discovery of a man's body, hanging from a tree. DI Annie Cabott soon discovers he is Mark Hardcastle, the well-liked and successful set designer for the Eastvale Theatre's current production of Othello. I enjoyed this book, it is not a fast paced thriller and the plot unravels slowly, but is great story telling. There is ample time to give granularity to the characters and there is enough personality to them, to make you like them. I have to admit that the elaborate description of Bank's music taste fascinated me and made me curious to listen to some of artists mentioned.

The story itself is a nice blend of spy story and who-done-it. The body count is low and there is not much violence in the events, but this makes the story very real and close to our own life. The narrative meanders through seemingly unrelated events and is spiced with a lot of personal issues of the individual characters, but all of this makes it such a pleasant book.

While Banks is on vacation, Annie Cabbot is called to the woods of Eastvale, where a young man obviously hanged himself. Very soon she finds out that prior to his suicide, this man murdered his lover in a very atrocious way. While all of this looks straightforward, the story takes a nasty turn, when MI5 and MI6 get involved, because the murder victim was a former spy.

It is fun to read, perhaps not a real page-turner, but entertaining none the less.
